Honest opinions on Evan as boys name

Hi, Evan is number one on our list for our long awaited DS, due to arrive soon hopefully. Really interested in hearing some honest opinions as have had mixed reactions from our families. Have a few others that we like like Ben and Rory although they are more popular in our area and we know a few of each. I can see Evan is quite popular in some areas but not yet where we live. Would love to hear what others think of this name before we make our final decision.

I like it. No negative connotations for me at all

Quangot · 02/09/2018 10:03

I like it much more than Ben or Rory.

DwangelaForever · 02/09/2018 10:04

I love it 😍😍 haven't mentioned it to DH yet but it's deffo on my list!

Joinourclub · 02/09/2018 10:06

I would pronounce it Evun and find it a bit of a nothing name.

But when I imagine it said in a booming welsh voice as Ev- AN I like it much more!

Redteapot67 · 02/09/2018 10:08

I agree - I think it’s sounds much better in welsh than English accent!

raviolidreaming · 02/09/2018 10:32

I love it! Bruce Springsteen's son is an Evan :)

MikeUniformMike · 02/09/2018 11:43

I like it but prefer Ifan.

foxycleopauper · 02/09/2018 13:12

I really like it Smile

cariadlet · 02/09/2018 13:17

I like it. Maybe because I think of it as a Welsh name and I've got Welsh parents. I don't think of it as a wet name - "v" is quite a strong phoneme.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 02/09/2018 14:26

I love the name Evan. We can't use it unfortunately as another family member beat us to it but if they hadn't would definitely be high on our list.

Zoflorabore · 02/09/2018 14:30

There is an Evan in my dd's class at school, he is 7. He doesn't look like an Evan which even I can't explain as what does an Evan look like?!

It's not one I would choose op.

afreshnewname · 02/09/2018 14:43

I like the name Evan but it's been ruined for me after I met a truly delightful girl who used the name for one of her (many, taken off her) children but pronounced it Ee-van

pastaandpestoagain · 02/09/2018 14:46

I would assume you were Welsh but it is fine.

Ginger1982 · 02/09/2018 14:58

I can only hear it in a Welsh accent now having watched Keeping Faith...

Sophiared · 02/09/2018 16:18

Thanks for all the opinions so far, it’s definitely making me think again. Interestingly my DH thought it was perhaps a bit ‘girly’ but I actually think it’s quite a strong name for a boy. Seems others agree with him. Also i did know it was welsh but didn’t realise it was viewed as such a definite strong welsh name ( if that makes sense). We are not welsh and no welsh connections, I’m Irish and my DH is English. To be honest I just really liked the name but now I’m wondering is it weird to use such a welsh name. I do appreciate all the honest opinions so thanks everyone.

I know two Evans OP neither are Welsh nor have Welsh parents, in fact one is Canadian and the other English. I think it's a lovely strong name and would be on my list if I had a boy.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/09/2018 18:46

Not girly, very masculine, love it !

Redteapot67 · 02/09/2018 20:37

To be fair the internet says it’s Celtic rather than welsh per se so you might get away with saying it’s irish?

How about ivan?

PenelopeThePufferfish · 02/09/2018 21:46

How about Eoin?

rebelrosie12 · 02/09/2018 21:51

I'm sorry I really don't like it. I also think it's a bit wet and insipid. I wouldn't put it in the same category as Ben or Rory, both of which I really like.

Lucy1103 · 03/09/2018 23:36

Sorry I’m another that finds it incredibly wet

WhyIsntGeorgeCalledPeterOrPaul · 04/09/2018 00:23

I quite like it. My OH wanted to use it for DS1 but for me it just wasn't the one. Didn't excite me enough.

But it is nice though. Short and strong, which I like.

Sophiared · 04/09/2018 09:06

Just want to say thanks for everyone who took time to reply. Opinions generally divided from ‘bit wet’ or ‘girly’ ( my DH’s worry!) to others who love it and think it’s a strong name (me!!) lol! Still love it but might seriously consider Ben or Rory more now or Eoin as a few suggested. Might just wait until he arrives and decide what suits. If I think he looks like Evan suits him, then think DH will be happy enough to go along.

Good plan
It’s the character that makes the man ultimately not the name!

Shadow1234 · 08/09/2018 23:46

Add me to the 'yes' list. I love it.
