If you had named your first child Hosanna...

I've name changed for this, because with a kid called Hosanna I'm hardly one of thousands in the UK (!)...

My husband is Zimbabwean and we were living over there when our daughter was born. It's more normal over there to have, what in the UK would be considered, unusual names, and we both liked the name, so Hosanna she is.

We're now in the UK and get a lot of "Susannah? Savanna? Rosanna?" type responses when we introduce her... which is fine, people tend to be able to cope with her name once they've worked it out!

We're imminently due our second, no idea of sex, and I'm wondering whether to go "weird" (in UK terms) again, or something more mainstream...

We've got a bit of a list going, but I'm curious to hear what others would do. (Obviously, going by stats, most of you wouldn't name your firstborn 'Hosanna'! But please for the sake of this question pretend you did!).

So, what would you name your next child, based on this info?!

Excelsis!

Grin

Just joking.

I like the suggestion of Emmanuel (for a boy, or Emmanuelle for a girl?)

Flamingosnbears · 29/08/2018 17:05

Gloria gets my vote goes really well and tie together with similar meanings

WomanWise · 29/08/2018 18:02

OP another suggestion - 'Praise' (very similar to Hossana), but its a lovely name or 'Serenity'.

Enb76 · 29/08/2018 18:07

I like Mordecai.

Mitzimaybe · 29/08/2018 18:15

Spat my drink out at Tedious! Ted for short, I suppose. Love it.

itssquidstella · 29/08/2018 18:28

Emmanuel(le) is nice.

Strippervicar · 29/08/2018 18:37

I once worked with a man called Promise. Great name.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 29/08/2018 18:39

I think Hosanna is a beautiful name. Wish I had thought of it when my youngest was born.

As for a name that would go with it - as someone else has suggested Selah would be lovely but I think that is definitely a girl's name.

If you wanted to go with the praise theme what about Judah or Jude for a boy?

MikeUniformMike · 29/08/2018 20:09

Peace or Blessing

WyfOfBathe · 29/08/2018 20:31

I love the name Hosanna. I think that because it "sounds" like Hannah/Joanna it would fit with a traditional English name, or a Biblical or virtue name.

I'm not personally keen on names which describe the person (Precious, Innocent, etc) as they seem a lot to live up to. I do like Joy and Faith though.

A lot of Old Testament names are coming to mind: Noah, Ezra, Elijah, Micah, Elisha, Miriam, Leah.

NoCureForLove · 29/08/2018 20:59

Precious for a girl.
Prosper for a boy.

theipadsavedmylife · 29/08/2018 21:44

Grace is a lovely name

The only precious I've known is of African decent, but that's a nickname and I can't remember her full traditional name but she would shorten it to Chi.

I'm not Christian so I don't know how important certain names are ( I know certain religions give more significance to certain people ) but I like the name Mary. I think it's classic.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 29/08/2018 22:04

Hosanna is a beautiful name I've never heard it as a name before.
I love Seraphine or Grace with Hosanna. I'd go for slightly more 'normal' but not too much. Don't go too ordinary.

newtlover · 29/08/2018 22:27

I think Hosanna's sibling needs a name that matches in some way- if you call them Jessica or Daniel it's as if you ran out of ideas!
I met a woman once called Happiness, I thought that was lovely (but she was west african if that matters)
But Blessing is lovely

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 30/08/2018 06:53

What a lovely name OP!

I might know someone cough with a DD named Joy, which I happen to think is a pretty special name and would go very well.

Marley45 · 30/08/2018 07:09

katmarie · 09/09/2018 01:15

I have two very lovely friends who are sisters, named Hosanna and Joy. Hosanna shortens her name to Zanna, which feels quite modern. They have a brother named Christopher :)

mathanxiety · 09/09/2018 07:51

Hosanna is a wonderful name!
I think you need to choose a name as memorable for the brother or sister.

It’s a fantastic name! I know a South African Susannah called Zanna for short, keep pushing the Sanna, it’ll get there!

finallychangedmyusername · 09/09/2018 08:17

Hosanna is stunning!
For a boy: Emmanuel, Jericho (unless I'm missing a political/religious reason why this is unusable) or Solomon.
Girls: Jubilee, Serenity, Keziah, Sunday.

Taff263 · 04/10/2020 23:23

I’ve named my first child Hosanna-Rose Smile

SeanCailleach · 05/10/2020 07:21

@hosiesmum that's a wonderful name and you must have matching names for the siblings.

How about

Kyria
Angelina
Azaria

Isaac
Solomon
Aloysius

Hosiesmum · 05/10/2020 07:32

@Taff263 congratulations! Our Hosanna isn't a Hosanna Rose, but she does get called Hosie Rosie as a nickname :) I think you made an excellent choice!

Also, for any subsequent readers who don't notice the dates up thread, we named our second child (and indeed our third child Shock ) already :) but thank you for your previous suggestions :)
