Expecting a baby girl.

Please do your worst to my short ish list

Nieve
Mary
Frida
Madeline
Alice
Betty
Julia
Dorothy to be known as Dot

Im not overly fussed on muddle names but will probably pick a family one possibly Elllen.

Want something not super popular but not too out there hence these choices.

Welcome any other suggestions Smile

You could go with Nieve but as a deliberate reference to it being the Spanish word for snow... You'd pronounce it neeyev (am rubbish at doing phonetic spellings!)

I love Rita by the way!

I like Betty - but would probably go for Betsy and I like Dorothy a lot

Good luck!

buckeejit · 24/08/2018 21:02

All good but I'd go Niamh if choosing that one

Agustarella · 24/08/2018 21:04

Julia is great, I quite like Frida too.

auntyflonono · 24/08/2018 21:13

What about Vita instead of Rita?

I love Dorothy! Also Dorothea.

capercaillie · 24/08/2018 21:18

Nieve - not keen especially with this spelling
Mary - not sure. A classic though and due revival
Frida - unusual
Madeline - not keen
Alice - love
Betty - only as shortening for Elizabeth.
Julia - love
Dorothy to be known as Dot - not keen

starkid · 24/08/2018 21:37

Julia and Mary are sweet and underused

TroubledLichen · 24/08/2018 21:38

Love Madeline. Also like Alice.

Atalune · 24/08/2018 21:40

Julia
Mary
Neve
Dorothy

The others I don’t like so much.

Elizabeth?
Maggie?
Lucy?

thisismadness77 · 24/08/2018 21:45

My girl is Neve. I love it.

GoldfishPretzels · 24/08/2018 21:49

Absolutely fine to use Niamh if you're not at all Irish. It's become a common name in England.

pouraglasshalffull · 24/08/2018 22:20

Nieve- nice name but nobody will ever spell or pronounce it right
Mary- no, no, no. It's not used much today for a reason
Frida- Alright I'd spell it Freida though. The spelling "Frida" looks ugly
Madeline- nice name but it just has huge connotations of spoilt brat
Alice- such a beautiful name. I love the name Alice
Betty- alright
Julia- no. I just don't like this name for some reason. I cannot put my finger on why though
Dorothy to be known as Dot- no, especially no to Dot. Dot Cotton

I think Ellen is a beautiful name, she'd get called Elle for short which I love. I'd personally modernise it to Ellena/Ellie/Ella/Elle just because Ellen is my least favourite off all the "Ell" type names.

Sophronia · 24/08/2018 23:02

I like Mary, Frida and Julia best.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 25/08/2018 07:25

I think one lesson from this thread is that Frida will cause spelling issues. Not everyone will understand 'like Kahlo'.

pilates · 25/08/2018 07:35

Only like Madeline
Dorothy, Julia and Betty are awful. Sorry.
How about Zara?

Mitzgerald · 25/08/2018 08:38

Mary or Alice for me

Cbeebiesrehab · 25/08/2018 08:54

Nieve - no, especially with this spelling
Mary - Will always be slang for vagina for me sorry.
Frida - unusual, not sure, don’t think I like it.
Madeline - not keen.
Alice - blah.
Betty - only as shortening for Elizabeth.
Julia - seems like a middle aged name.
Dorothy to be called Dot-I want to like it but I just can’t get on board 100%

Sorry just realised I’ve been quite negative. None of them are quite right to me. Although I really like Rita-proper vintage cool! And also really like Ellen.

Slartybartfast · 25/08/2018 08:59

Nieve - would do Niamh
Mary quite nice
Frida yup
Madeline not really
Alice yes
Betty not sure
Julia quite nice
Dorothy to be known as Dot - not keen on dot, eastenders - but like dorothy

bridgetreilly · 25/08/2018 10:17

I think it's more culturally appropriative to take a name and re-spell it, tbh. If you want to call her Niamh, call her Niamh.

But my choice from your list would be Frida. Unusual, interesting, easy. Also possibly consider Winifred, nn Freddy.

MikeUniformMike · 25/08/2018 10:20

Nieve - not this spelling
Mary - great
Frida - ok
Madeline - no
Alice - great
Betty - not sure
Julia - no
Dorothy to be known as Dot - brilliant, love it.

itssquidstella · 25/08/2018 10:23

I like Mary, Alice, Julia and Dorothy. Really dislike the others.

Kittykatmacbill · 25/08/2018 19:53

Only one I even slightly like is Ellen. Such a lovely under used name!

Moominfan · 25/08/2018 19:56

Frida is really cool, the rest girls frilly and wet

Icklepup · 25/08/2018 20:01

Love Alice and wouldn't say it's boring.

mintich · 25/08/2018 20:10

Nieve -love, but only if spelled Niamh
Mary - cute, maybe a bit dull
Frida- don't like this, reminds me of food...I don't know why!
Madeline - like
Alice -ok but bit popular at the moment
Betty - cute!
Julia - like will be nicer as she gets older
Dorothy to be known as Dot - Not sure if Dot is a bit boring

TillyTheTiger · 25/08/2018 20:12

Nieve - I'd avoid it, just based on the spelling issues.
Mary - Nice name but some people use it as slang for vagina which puts me off.
Frida - Makes me think of Abba. So I like it.
Madeline - Love it, it's beautiful.
Alice - Really sweet.
Betty - Would you use Elizabeth on the birth cert? Would give her more options when she's older.
Julia - Not keen.
Dorothy to be known as Dot - No.
