Hi everyone, I was just wondering what your favourite nicknames for Elizabeth are? Our DD tends to be called Betsy at home. Not sure if it’s the best choice for when she gets older though! Opinions appreciated!

Queenie is an old fashioned NN for Elizabeth?

Vicky1990 · 22/08/2018 23:55

My aunt Elizabeth was called Betty, I think that is the traditional way to do it.

RedDwarves · 23/08/2018 10:40

I'm an Elizabeth. I would say she's 98% likely to be come a Liz/Lizzy.

LadyHooHa · 23/08/2018 10:43

Blib-blob (nn of an erstwhile classmate Elizabeth).

ItWentInMyEye · 23/08/2018 10:46

I know an Elizabeth who gets Betty.

LeeMiller · 23/08/2018 10:51

Bess is my favourite.

sirlee66 · 23/08/2018 11:06

The Queen's nickname is "Lilibet". However, the Duke of Edinburgh is also known to affectionately call her "Cabbage".

I'd go with Cabbage.

WatcherintheRye · 23/08/2018 11:34

My favourite nickname would be Libby.

Belindabauer · 23/08/2018 12:05

I love Buffy - didn't know it was a nickname for Elizabeth until recently. Betsy is lovely though!

My older sister is Elisabeth, she was Betsy when younger, but changed to Bess when she was about 14 ("it sounds more grown up", she said).

I do think Bess is my favourite nickname for Elisabeth/Elizabeth, but I also love Betsy, Elsa and Elsie. I also like Lissy, which works for the S spelling, but not the Z. I know an Elizabeth who is Zizzy, and I like that too.

I cannot stand Lizzy/Lizzie and Beth. I find them dull and dreary.

foxtiger · 23/08/2018 17:50

I like Liz or Lizzie, but I think you should accept that she will choose her own shortening (or perhaps no shortening at all) when she's old enough. The Elizabeth in my family is always called Elizabeth.

LadyHooHa · 23/08/2018 17:51

Reminds me that there was also a Tizzy at school.

Greeneyedgeek83 · 23/08/2018 23:17

Bette

Lucylookingforhelp · 23/08/2018 23:24

Not really an automatic nn to jump to but after being a skins fan have to say Effy

Lisabel · 23/08/2018 23:38

Lizzy, Lily, Ellie

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 23/08/2018 23:42

I know a Lizza, or you could have Lisa, Elise, Elsie, Bethan, Bethany, as well as the more usual ones.

ChesterBelloc · 23/08/2018 23:51

Mine (spelt with an 's' not 'z') is usually nn Lily, occasionally Lizbubs or Lillabub.

Rebecca36 · 24/08/2018 00:55

Beth, Liz, Bet. Let her choose. Elizabeth is a lovely name, nice to hear someone has chosen it for their child, it's not been around much recently.

Ihuntmonsters · 24/08/2018 06:02

I don't know any adult Betsys. The small Elizabeth I know is Libby and the teen is always Elisabeth. I know an adult Liz and a very elegant adult Betty, but I think that might be her full name.

I'd really not worry too much OP, you've given your dd a name with many many potential diminutives which she can choose from should she ever decide that Betsy doesn't really suit her anymore. My dd as a young teenager decided to use her full name only at secondary school and a different shortening with friends but dh, ds and me still use the diminutive we picked when she was born (plus a load of silly variations). My sister did the same, while I only use my childhood nickname with my immediate family. It's never been an issue. I think the option to have a variety of names for different occasions is really useful.

Bristolgal · 24/08/2018 10:14

I have to say Beth, as I have one 💖 (She's not Elizabeth, although we contemplated it). But I love all the possible nicknames! Libby, Lizzie and Eliza in particular.

RedPencil · 24/08/2018 15:35

Libby is my favourite Elizabeth nickname.

AdoreTheBeach · 24/08/2018 15:40

My sister is Elizabeth. She has decided through the years to use different nicknames at different stages in her life - as well as Elizabeth (in full). She’s been Liz, Lizbeth and Beth. She’s currently back to Liz.

I have an aunt whose name is Elizabeth. She has always been known as Betty.
