How did you know when you'd hit upon the right name?

With DC one we heard the name at around 16 weeks and that was that - done!

This time around we have one we love and are using and fits (as much as I think of other names nothing else seems to work yet) but we both still have doubts!

Such as:

  • It's got the same last letter/sound as DC 1
  • It's more popular/used than DC 1's name

We never questioned DC 1's name, but despite loving this one we keep questioning ourselves!

So how did you know when you'd hit upon the right name? And did any of you still have some doubts but go with it anyway?

I fall into the 'had doubts but went with it anyway' category. It was easy with DD as she is named after my dad; with DS i always wanted Daniel but DP hated it. With a vengence. So did my mum which didn't help!!

We struggled for ages so in the end I told DP unless he gave me a name he 100% liked (he pulled faces at everything i suggested) then DS was going to be Daniel. I was 35 weeks when he finally gave me a name...it grew on me over the next few weeks. When DS was born it just seemed to fit Smile

We're having dc3. It's only early days.
About 4 weeks ago I almost like heard a voice that said to me "it's going to be a boy and it's going to be called x"
It was an unusual/unconventional name.

About 2 weeks later dp made the first name suggestion. He suggested the same unusual name. I was gobsmacked. We both just knew that was what baby will be called.

Fast forward another week and we were out with our best friend who says so I figured you are calling baby x then. We were both gobsmacked.
No other suggestions have been made.
No way they could have known.

I'm not pregnant but OH and I have been discussing future names the past few weeks as TTC is on the cards next year. I loved one name he loved another and while listing other names I like I said "Theodore" he instantly said yes Theo is great. I said no I'd probably call him Teddy as I think it's adorable for a kid. We then spent the next hour talking about what he would be like and that was it. Theodore nn. Teddy it is x

Pretty much the same conversation took place with our girls name, Violet lol x

It was the only name we both liked! I liked many, DP was fussy!

With DD it was the first name I suggested and DH said he like it too. We came up with others but I just knew that would be her name. With DS we struggled. He was going to be Cameron for a most of the pregnancy. A few weeks before he was due. I made DH look through a names book. He suggested a name which I also liked but had dismissed as I never thought he'd like. It just fell into place

Daughters name decided before even TTC as a family name. Had a bit of a wobble towards the end of pregnancy but it was never in doubt really-that was her name.

Son we really struggled to find anything. Decided on a name but I knew it wasn’t the one. I was lying down for a nap one day and his name just came to me. It was one we had considered but disguarded-but I just knew then it was his name. Went downstairs and told OH and miraculously he agreed! That was that!

It was the only name we both liked, out of many many many I'd suggested (he suggested two, both joke names). I then went right off it, as I decided it would only suit a child with a particular look and I didn't picture our baby with that look (red hair, rosy cheeks, very Welsh face). When he was born, he looked exactly like that - we both looked at each other and said the name and that was that.

DP and I couldn’t agree at all. We found out the sex at a private scan when I was 16 weeks and between then and about 24 weeks we just couldn’t decide.

He wanted Geoffrey or Raymond Hmm, I said I’m not giving birth to an OAP Grin. I wanted Sebastian but he vetoed purely because of a twat at school. So we were at absolute loggerheads for weeks. Everything I mentioned, he didn’t seem to like.

I kept saying one of the ‘maybe’ names we had in my head and I thought of the associated shortened versions which would also be cute so raised it with DP and he thankfully agreed.

I did think until then our DS wasn’t going to have a name.

I have a little Phoebe.. i knew she'd be Phoebe years before I was even pregnant (or met my OH).

I was driving to work one day and Vernon Kay was on the radio and he mentioned his daughter, Phoebe . I just instantly was like, oh my, i love that name. immediately pictured a little blonde called Phoebe! And my daughter turned out blonde too ! Lol. Can't imagine her being anything else. Was so happy my OH liked it too .

(Most people ask if I named her after my friends obsession. I didn't haha. Hadn't even considered it as a baby name before I heard it on the radio that day )

Time ran out so we went with the name that was currently top of our list. Still not 100% convinced.

MorrisDancingViv · 21/08/2018 13:50

Truthfully we just 'settled'. We just couldn't find another name that we both liked. I like dd's name but I don't love it.

I'm pregnant again, I'm more inclined to pull rank and play the pushing it out card this time(!)
