Scared family members make unwanted comments

So! I think myself and my partner have settled on the Irish name Fiadh for a girl as I've loved it for a while and my partner has finally warmed to it! I'm just scared my in laws will make some rude comments about it as they have with previous names suggested! Should we keep the name a secret until baby is here?

Yes keep it a secret whatever it is. No one comments when the baby is here.

Never tell anyone your baby name until the baby is here. I only told people the name we chose once dd was here because we loved it so I didn't need any one else's opinion.

Always keep it a secret. No one turn their name up at a name when presented with a baby.

If you’re worried they’ll make comments on the spelling (obvs there’s nothing wrong with the spelling but in case that’s what you’re concerned they’ll go on about), you could use Fia - common in Sweden, same sound.

BEAUTIFUL name! We told family members our baby name with DC1 after we had scary anomalies at the 20-week scan - it was a bit calculated as no one could complain in light of the issues (and I knew they would hate it!)
Now expecting DC2 and will not tell a single family member our name choice as I know they won't like this one either! But as PP have said, it's much harder for people to comment/complain once baby is here and named and they will get used to it!
IMO when baby isn't here yet people labour under the misapprehension that not only could they influence you to chance, but that you also NEED them to help you change! It's sod all to do with them!!

I'd keep it quiet ! My partner mentioned our girls name to his family really early on before we even found out the sex and they didn't like it at all. I had my heart set on it before we were even TTC so I just stayed quiet (although was crying inside) and we never mentioned it again until the birth ! Even if they asked we just said we had a few but not set on one yet. One of them even commented 'i hope its not that name you mentioned before' .

Also, just remembered I taught a kid with that name but spelled Phia. If you were looking for an alternative spelling.

Personally I think it sounds like you can't say Thea properly! But I'm not Irish.

Beautiful name. And yes I made the mistake of telling our unusual (but not made up or anything) name for DS1 when I was pregnant and I had people trying to suggest other names and change my mind Hmm
I told them this isn’t an idea, this is his name. They still did it!

It’s now his name, (he’s almost 4),and I’ll never forget those comments Sad best not give them the chance tbh!

Don't worry about what they think. Not loving the name won't stop them loving the child, and they'll soon adjust once she's here and it's her name. I bet you don't love all the names they chose for their own children or would sugest as alternatives for yours - people have different taste, and there are generational differences.

You say your partner has warmed to it - I wouldn't tell them if he is easily influenced and might go off it in response to their criticism. Otherwise I'd just tell them they names their child(ren), now it's your turn.
