Hippos is Ancient Greek for horse; hippopotamus = river horse; hippodrome = horse-racing track etc.

Equus is Latin for horse.

You could forbid any nicknames and only ever call the kid Hippodamia no nicknames, the first sound other kids would hear would still be Hippo. It's like being called Shithani.
