Struggling to choose a baby name

steph2608 · 08/08/2018 09:46

3 weeks to go and DH and I still can’t decide on a girl’s name (team yelllow). In the running currently are:

Matilda (nn Maddie)
Ottilie
Juliette
Felicity
Harriet
Charlotte (nn Charlie/Lottie)
Isobel
Imogen
Cleo

We have a 4 year old daughter called Alice Isla so looking for something that fits with this.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome!

Thanks

Matilda or Imogen don’t like any of the others.

redmini4 · 08/08/2018 09:51

Matilda or Ottilie

Shmithecat · 08/08/2018 09:52

Felicity is lovely.

rugbychick1 · 08/08/2018 09:55

Harriet. Only because I have one!

Sophronia · 08/08/2018 10:12

Harriet or Juliet

ladycarlotta · 08/08/2018 10:17

Ottilie is so cute.

I think Matilda, Imogen or Harriet sound best in combination with Alice.

bridgetreilly · 08/08/2018 10:39

In order, I like:
Felicity
Harriet
Juliette (though I prefer Juliet)
Matilda (nn Maddie)
Isobel
Charlotte (nn Charlie/Lottie)
Imogen
Ottilie
Cleo

I think they're all fine with an Alice.

MorrisDancingViv · 08/08/2018 10:41

Juliette Ottilie

AtticaRose · 08/08/2018 10:42

All nice, but I think I would pick Matilda or Imogen.

I had literally never heard Ottilie before Mumsnet - so I find that a little more unusual, but still nice.

ReginaPhalange89 · 08/08/2018 10:43

I like felicity and Harriet! So pretty.

Ottilie, Isobel and Juliette are my least favourite of the bunch. The others are all nice , and I think they all go quite nicely with Alice too

DuggeeHugs · 08/08/2018 11:37

I think Cleo is lovely

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/08/2018 14:38

Harriet or Isobel

Marylou2 · 08/08/2018 15:20

Oh I like all those names. Not very helpful I know but at least your baby will have lovely name. Could you and your DH/ partner not write your favourite 3 on a list and if one coincides that'll be the one.

FlappyFeet · 08/08/2018 15:25

Maddy for Matilda is a bit odd.

Pick one of the other ones.

DC2018 · 08/08/2018 15:31

My favourites are Juliet (spelt this way) and Felicity. Matilda is also nice but I would nn Tilly. X

Stuckforthefourthtime · 08/08/2018 15:35

You have loads of good choices! Maybe when she arrives one will jump out 😊 To me

Top 4
Matilda - though to me Maddie would be an odd nicknane, surely Mattie, or one of the loveliest little girls I know is Tilda/Tildie
Felicity
Harriet
Cleo (love this one!!! My favourite for a girl was Clio like the Greek muse but my husband vetoed due to the Renault... And now we have all boys, so I will need to get a female pet of some kind to give the name to...)

Not for me
Charlotte (nn Charlie/Lottie) - lovely name, but around here every second girl under 2 seems to be Charlotte
Isobel - too many spelling options, will annoy her forever
Imogen - fine, but not as lovely or as classy as your others
Ottilie, Juliette - too frilly, again a pain for spelling

MiniSunshine · 08/08/2018 15:37

Cleo Juliette has a nice ring to it!

steph2608 · 08/08/2018 15:40

Unfortunately my niece is Millie (short for Amelia) and so Tilly isn’t an option for us as a nickname for Matilda

Stuckforthefourthtime · 08/08/2018 15:51

Milly and Tilly is fine for cousins, surely? Not for sisters, but personally I would have been thrilled to either have a namesake or a mini-me, and through their lives even close cousins are not going to be associated by everyone as a pair.

My husband's best friend has the same name as him, and even though they've gone through boarding school and then being housemates together, people get used to it pretty quickly - this is a lot less than that.

Quangot · 08/08/2018 16:51

Felicity is a lovely name and not over-popular at the moment. I don't like the nicknames Fliss/Flick/Flee very much, but Lissi or Fi are OK.

Isobel is really nice but rather overused at the moment. Juliette would be a good choice I think.

Not a fan of Matilda or Ottilie.

haribosmarties · 08/08/2018 16:53

Ottilie, Juliette or Cleo... just because the other names although pretty are all in the top baby names for the last few years so will be everywhere

AnyaMoondial · 08/08/2018 17:13

Matilda! Love it.

Really like Cleo too. Alice and Cleo sound really good together.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/08/2018 18:18

I like Isobel, Cleo, Harriet and Juliet, spelled this way.

steph2608 · 08/08/2018 18:55

Thanks for all the responses. It’s definitely given me food for thought. I am now trying to convince DH that the better spelling is Juliet. I think it’s more straightforward.
I really like the suggestions of Juliet Ottilie and this is probably the front runner now.

I also love Matilda but it is so popular now I think she would end up being one of a few in a class. I like Ottilie the best but think it may be too “out there” for a first name contender.

Cleo is a lovely name but DH thinks it’s not a “proper” name. I think we are discounting Charlotte and Isobel just due to popularity.

Thanks again for your comments. They’ve really helped!
