We both added Heather into the mix last night and it's started to grow on me. Problem is I HATE when people shorten it to hev it really makes my skin crawl it's an awful Nick name😞 but is it unavoidable?

The Heathers I know get Heth not Hev.

DramaAlpaca · 04/08/2018 18:26

I like Hettie as a nn for Heather. It works.

MorbidMuch · 04/08/2018 18:30

I know a few Heathers and their names aren't shortened. I really like the name. All the Heathers I know / have known have been very kind souls.

Kokeshi123 · 05/08/2018 00:46

It's a bit 80s/90s but not bad and it's unusual at least.

I would tend to shorten it to Hetty, if anything.

caoraich · 05/08/2018 00:52

I like it. I know 5 or 6 adult Heathers and 3 baby/child Heathers. None of them get shortened except one who goes by her surname! Have never heard "hev"

IAmTheWifeOfMaoTseTung · 05/08/2018 01:01

Watch the film then decide. It’s having a bit of a moment this year.

flissypix · 05/08/2018 01:10

My baby sister is called Heather. I don’t think anyone shortens it, she has the nickname Jelly/Jellyboots from her middle name so we use that.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 05/08/2018 01:27

It is my name, I have been called Het or Hetty over the years but not Hev! I like my name and never got teased for it, never wanted to change it. Good choice 😁

I did love the film Heathers of course but it didn't cause me issues with my name

commonarewe · 05/08/2018 01:34

Very Scottish, very ... moor-y, for obvious reasons. Avoid unless you have close connections to both!

Bue · 05/08/2018 05:48

I know many, many heathers and none are shortened. DH calls his sister "heavier" as a nn but that's by the by 🙄

merlotmummy14 · 05/08/2018 13:33

DD is Heather and at 4 months gets called Hettie (although some people on some sides of the family don't like it and think it's too posh). Nobody is allowed to call her Hevs as I hate it although dp still does occasionally. Lovely name, very modest.

IsadoraQuagmire · 05/08/2018 14:39

Since I'm completely obsessed with Heathers The Musical and the Heathers movie (and looking forward to seeing the original film on the big screen for the first time next week -it first came out about 8 years before I was born, so only seen it on TV/DVD) I ADORE the name Heather!
I've met several Heathers irl and never heard it shortened at all.

SumAndSubstance · 05/08/2018 14:44

I know a few Heathers and the only time I've ever heard it shortened to 'Hev' is on EastEnders.

Redtartanshoes · 05/08/2018 14:48

It’s my name Smile
Never had hev or hettie. I get H but that’s been my choice, and kinda suits me

MariaMadita · 05/08/2018 14:58

I prefer Erica but Heather is also nice. Is Hev a popular / likely nickname where you live?

Frogscotch7 · 05/08/2018 15:02

I know quite a lot of Heathers, aged 10 and up. They are all called by their full name. It’s a lovely name.

Serenity05 · 06/08/2018 11:15

The only 'Hev' I can think of is Heather from EastEnders. Not a great connotation but all the RL Heathers I've known have been Heth or just Heather. I don't know any Heathers born this century though, but I'm thrilled at the thought of it making a comeback cos I think it's gorgeous!

lifechangesforever · 06/08/2018 11:36

I'm surprised by how many have never heard of Heather being shortened to Hev! I've known 2 Heather and both were nicknamed Hev (I hate it too!)

BonnieLass5 · 06/08/2018 11:41

I've known two Heathers. Both were often shortened to Hev.

Not a nice name IMO. Very wet fish and Hev is just awful.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 06/08/2018 19:47

Yes, I know a Hevs, dreadful. Hettie is a lovely nn, Heather is classy.

MayhemandMadness01 · 06/08/2018 20:00

My boss is Heather, she's one of the nicest, most caring people, I've ever met. She sometimes gets Hev and has sometimes signed email off as that but generally its Heather

MozzieMagnet · 06/08/2018 20:08

nn - H or Heaths (hard 'the' sound not soft th)
but your child will usually adopt the nn you choose
Heather Mills - not so awesome
Heather Locklear - awesome
Heather Graham - awesome
Heather from Highlander - awesome

Charlotte1x · 07/08/2018 16:29

Heather is a lovely name. My best friend is a Heather and I’ve never known anyone to call her Hev :)

Smoliver · 07/08/2018 18:51

I love Heather. I went to university with a girl named Heather and everyone just called her Heather, never Hev. Name shortenings can always be avoided Smile
