Welsh baby names that work in England

Just that really. I'm English, my husbands Welsh, we live in England (and no risk of moving anytime soon)

I'd like to go Welsh as it makes the name more unusual in England but I don't want it to be unpronounceable for the English!

Not going to find out the gender so we need a few options! Any ideas are welcomed x

I know an Eleri - I think that's a great name! I don't know any others, but it's really easy to read.

Also love Bethan, Sian, and Welsh spellings of well-known names, like Elin and Alys.

TwigTheWonderKid · 31/07/2018 21:32

Sorry, the cat was "helping" me type that post.

LiveatCityHall · 31/07/2018 21:34

My son is called Emrys and we live in the home counties. Neither DH nor I are Welsh but we just loved that name. And it's merlin's real name!!! My childminder however insists on calling him "em-er-is" which drives me MAD!!!

youarenotkiddingme · 31/07/2018 21:36

Tomás
Rhys/Reece

Rtmhwales · 31/07/2018 21:37

I had the same issue. Baby’s father is Welsh but I’ve gone back to Canada and needed a Welsh middle name that was pronounceable here. I settled on the choices Rhys or griffin for a boy and Eira or Eleri for a girl. Loveeee then.

LoveInTokyo · 31/07/2018 21:51

I love Rhiannon for a girl.

Dylan for a boy?

MrsRubyMonday · 31/07/2018 21:59

Girls
Angharad
Bloddwyn (Blo-th-wen - o as in orange)
Elin
Arianwyn
Ceridwen
Delyth
Eleri
Gwendolyn

Boys
Cadoc
Daffyd
Gawain
Geraint
Ieuan
Iolo
Macsen

And of course the ever popular Welsh form of Humphrey... Wmffrey!

DaniCam89 · 31/07/2018 22:01

My favourites are Emrys, Rhys or Bryn for a boy. Carys, Morgan or Gwenith for a girl x

missmouse101 · 31/07/2018 22:05

Nye for a boy, Tegan, Teleri or Lowri for a girl.

missmouse101 · 31/07/2018 22:06

Also like Deri for a boy and Manon for a girl.

FloweryTwats45 · 31/07/2018 22:09

Bryn for a boy
Rhiannon for girl.

VioletCharlotte · 31/07/2018 22:14

Sian
Bethan
Gwen

Cai
Dylan
Owen

sproutsandparsnips · 31/07/2018 22:14

My boy is Gethin - we do live in Wales but all my English family can pronounce and spell it.

Tournesol · 31/07/2018 22:15

Llewelyn
Evan
Owen
Ellis
Glyn

Dinah
Carys
Eirlys

All names on my Welsh family tree!

Frazzled2207 · 31/07/2018 22:24

Also had this dilemma

Gethin
Dylan
Owen
Steffan

Alys
Bethan
Menna

With the possible exception of Alys however, all these names would be pronounced slightly differently in Wales. Eg I think Bethan is a lovely name but hate how it becomes Beth-un in England.

Frazzled2207 · 31/07/2018 22:27

Oh and for a little girl born in winter Eira is lovely (snow)

ImaCeri · 01/08/2018 00:05

As per my name change, I'm a Ceri. It was so normal growing up and then I moved to England in my 20s. I hate it with a passion.
I'm either asked: like Katona? Or pronounced every which way of wrong. Seri. Seree. Cherry. Seer-eye. Or just gaping mouths. And on top of that my name was never on a pencil case or pen or ruler.

If you want to pick Welsh, please do megan or catrin or Morgan or something no-one will laugh at or mess up daily!!

GRW · 01/08/2018 00:54

Ceri is lovely, also Cerys which I prefer to Carys. I love Seren and Bethan too. How about Ifan or Brynmor for a boy?

TatianaLarina · 01/08/2018 09:21

Ioan, Osian, Llwellyn/Llewi,

Manon, Carys, Guinevere/Gwenhwyfar, Eleri

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 01/08/2018 09:49

Ffion is a sweet name for a girl
