Are these names too much?

Evangeline
Esmeralda
Rowena
Rosemary
Arabella

I love long feminine names but I'm not sure if we are brave enough to use them. The above are the favourites but are they too much? Does anyone know any, what are their nicknames?

I know Rosemary, Rowena and Arabella.

All 3 are tall, slim and very bright. Lovely people.

butlerswharf · 15/07/2018 19:20

For me only Esmeralda is too much. Just because I find it such an ugly name.

Pemba · 15/07/2018 19:23

I agree with pps that Esmeralda is the only one that is perhaps a bit OTT. Not that keen on Rowena.

I think Rosemary is lovely, and due a revival. I have heard Romy being used as a nickname, which is quite chic.

IggyAce · 15/07/2018 19:23

My DD middle name is Evangeline, it could of easily been her first name but we decided when she was born she x Evangeline. Nn is likely to be Evie but Evan, Angie, or Vannie are possibilities.

GetToFuck · 15/07/2018 19:26

Rosemary is delicious.

userabcname · 15/07/2018 19:38

No I really like them. My favourites are Rosemary and Esmeralda. Lovely.

popcorneveryminute · 15/07/2018 19:45

Evangeline is beautiful. Esmeralda is a bit ott for me.

Enko · 15/07/2018 19:45

Rowena was on our short list and I still love it as a name

I know 3 Esmeralda's 2 knowns as Esme
1 Arabella who gets called Arabella i cant imagine it as a downmarked name at all

pennycarbonara · 15/07/2018 19:47

I love Rowena - that's my hands-down favourite. And I like Rosemary as well. I think the others are on the frilly side.

Agree with all this.

rosesandflowers1 · 15/07/2018 19:47

I like Evangeline and Esmeralda. DD1 was almost Evangeline and Esmerelda was on my shortlist for DD2!

I also quite like Arabella, though I think it's got negative connotations for some people. I'm not a fan of Rosemary and Rowena just makes me think of Harry Potter! While I'm a great HP fan perhaps not a good idea Grin

Cosmoa · 15/07/2018 19:52

I love Esmerelda to be honest! And I also love Esme so that would be my choice out of your list. I'd love to find out if you were brave enough to use it when the time comes 😍

Frogscotch7 · 15/07/2018 19:52

Rowena is really pretty! My favourite of your list. I know a few rosemarys and like it too. Evangeline is very pretty but don’t think I’d have the guts to use it.

Arabella and Esmeralda sound like Disney princesses. Way too frilly.

sola82 · 15/07/2018 19:55

My DS1 was going to be Evangeline if he had been a girl. I've went off it since, only because it would inevitably be shortened to Eva/Evie which are very popular names currently.
I like Rosemary from your list best. It's a little old-fashioned but in a sweet, gentle way.

Terriblydifficult · 15/07/2018 19:57

Esmeralda is a great name. I taught one once and sometimes the other children called her Ezzy.

Ericho · 15/07/2018 20:30

Rosemary and Arabella are fine, Esmeralda is awful, and I hate the sounds of Rowena and especially Evangeline.

mondler · 15/07/2018 20:41

I love Rosemary- it's on our list. I love that it can be Rose, Rosie, Mary etc.

Flamingosnbears · 15/07/2018 20:48

One of them is my Daughter's name so not in my opinion 😊

Royallypissedoff1 · 15/07/2018 20:50

Rosemary and Evangeline are absolutely gorgeous! Timeless and elegant!
The others are quite nice too to be fair but Evangeline and Rosemary are names I considered.
Also OP, would you pronounce it like Rose-Mary or Rose-Marie? Either way, it's beautiful!

hungryhippie · 15/07/2018 20:52

I think they are all lovely names

ShotsFired · 15/07/2018 22:40

What about Rosalind?

WhereIsMyDog · 15/07/2018 22:49

Ooh love Rosalind!

Rosemary is sort of in between Rose-Mary and Rose-Marie in my accent. Interesting to think about how others might pronounce it!

Rosemary is one I'm leaning towards. I like the idea that she can be Rose/Rosie/Rosa etc to family and friends and then have a more formal name for when she wants/needs it.

Love Evangeline.

Not keen on Rowena. A girl I knew with that name was called 'Roweiner'. Not nice.

Arabella is a bit much and surprisingly popular around here!

I would also consider Genevieve, Angelina, Emmeline, Vivienne, Cecily, Imogen...

RedDwarves · 15/07/2018 22:52

Love Arabella and Evangeline. I think you'd have to be quite an ardent Christian to get away with Evangeline, though.

Fifthtimelucky · 15/07/2018 22:54

Agree that Rosalind is nicer than Rosemary. I like Rosamund even more.
I also like Rowena. It reminds me of Ivanhoe.

I don't like the rest, though.

Brie · 15/07/2018 22:55

Evangaline is gorgeous!
