We want a Scandinavian name for our girl due to a family connection, but also one which works well in English. Which on of either Ingrid or Sonja do you feel work well over here?

Maria I see what you mean but that could depend what your first language is if it has the j pronounced as y thing as many other languages don't - Sonia could also be pronounced like son-e-a by someone who hasn't heard it before and Ingrid In-gride So it doesn't really make a difference I suppose as people can mispronounced anything. My brothers jock and his american teacher thought it was french and pronounced it jzock.I agree she could probably just say Sonja with a j and people would know where the j went.

Sonia and Ingrid are both nice. Sonja will get mispronounced.
I prefer Ingrid and also really like Inge.

I love Ingrid. Sonja I think would be mispronounced.

ZebraKid71 · 17/07/2018 14:52

Ingrid, I really don't like Sonja.

Love Ingrid, it's was on my shortlist for DD but got vetoed by DH. Personally I'm not a fan of Sonja

DaniCam89 · 17/07/2018 19:04

I prefer Ingrid. X

Sonja.

Also like pp suggestion of Astrid.

How about Silke, don't really know why I'm suggesting it as it's German. Lovely though Wink

Sorry, Ingrid will always be Norman Stanley Fletcher’s daughter.
What about Asta?

bringbackfonzi · 17/07/2018 23:20

Love Ingrid, hate (sorry) Sonja.

GreatDane10 · 25/07/2018 20:07

Ingrid is my daughter's middle name so I am biased. I think it's classically Scandinavian.

tryingtocatchthewind · 25/07/2018 20:12

I prefer Ingrid

Dontbuymesocks · 25/07/2018 20:16

I used to flatshare with a Sonja (with a J) and it was never mispronounced - it’s very international which is perhaps why.
I like both but I think Sonja has the edge.

thisonebreath · 25/07/2018 20:16

Ingrid is lovely.

Backhometothenorth · 25/07/2018 20:35

Love Ingrid.

Sonja/Sonia is one of my least fave names

I love Ingrid, it was my late grandmothers name whom I adored. I do think it gets misprounced in English though has people prounounce the d. Every name/word ending in a D in Scandinavian languages are silent
