Our first baby is due imminently and we're not having much luck reducing our shortlists... Which of these names do you like best? Any similar names to throw into the mix? Any thoughts about first name/middle name combinations?

Our surname is very common, starts with G, and is only one syllable long so looking for multi-syllable first names. DH and I are both English but live in Scotland, with connections to France and Japan.

Alexander
Fabian
Farron
Julius
Lucas
William

Anna
Aoi (Japanese, pr. just as written: A-o-i)
Elise/Eloise/Heloise
Freya
Katherine
Penelope
Saoirse (pr. seer-sha)
Sophie

Thank you!

I love Elise the most!

Boys from your list I like Lucas the most.

Flamingosnbears · 26/06/2018 12:39

I think they are all good choices
Luca is another possibility or Antonio, Elisa is a possibility for girls following Elise.

LoveInTokyo · 26/06/2018 12:49

Alexander - lovely
Fabian - like it
Farron - don't like it
Julius - prefer Julian
Lucas - OK
William - like it

Anna - one of my favourites Smile
Aoi (Japanese, pr. just as written: A-o-i) - I think this is weird if you're English
Elise/Eloise/Héloïse - like Elise the best out of these
Freya - nice but very popular at the moment
Katherine - lovely and underused
Penelope - really like it
Saoirse (pr. seer-sha) - nice but a bit weird if you're English
Sophie - little bit boring

Fabian
Elise

diddl · 26/06/2018 13:30

Julius
Elise

Susannach · 26/06/2018 13:59

Julius or Fabian

Katherine or Heloise

OrlandaFuriosa · 26/06/2018 14:12

Alexander, Julius, William, then Fabian. I think Alexander William is a great combo. I too prefer Julian to Julius.

Tobias, Horatio, would have said Louis but that baby has nabbed it, Hector, Benedict, Augustus, Anselm, Jeremy. Duncan, Dugald.

I like Anna, esp as a sensible second name, love Penelope

Susanna, Judith, Theodora, Dorothea, Cecily, Felicity, Louisa, Eleanora, Lalage ( Lall a gee), Merran, Elspeth, Damaris, Persis, Thecla, Thalia, Artemis, Diana, Margaret/Marguerite, Jennifer and Jeannie.

OrlandaFuriosa · 26/06/2018 14:13

And Julia, Juliana, Juliet.

kaytee87 · 26/06/2018 14:14

Lucas or William
Katharine or Elise

MiniAlphaBravo · 26/06/2018 14:17

William Lucas G
Katherine Sophie G

William is an excellent classic name with good nickname potential.

I like Penelope a lot as well but I think it’s becoming very popular and Katherine is a classic but not well used at present. I find aoi difficult to pronounce and Saoirse is also difficult. Plus you don’t say you have an Irish commections and it is a name very much associated with the Republic of Ireland.

juneau · 26/06/2018 14:21

Alexander
Fabian
Farron
Julius
Lucas
William

I love both Alexander and William - the latter is very popular around here - but I'd go with one of those. Lucas rhymes with mucus, which has always put me off! There are three in DS1's class though, so it obviously doesn't bother some parents. Fabian and Julius are a bit pretentious IMO and Farron is a surname.

Anna
Aoi (Japanese, pr. just as written: A-o-i)
Elise/Eloise/Heloise
Freya
Katherine
Penelope
Saoirse (pr. seer-sha)
Sophie

Freya and Sophie are popular around here. Saorise is too hard to spell and pronounce, so unless you're in Ireland I'd avoid that one, ditto Aoi (unless you're in Japan). I'd probably go with Elise/Eloise (not Heloise), Katherine or Penelope.

juneau · 26/06/2018 14:22

Oh and Anna - nice but a bit boring!

IggyAce · 26/06/2018 14:23

I grew up in Scotland and went to university there too... there is the general way of expressing fondness by teasing friends to keep in mind.

I'm very out of date as to what is typical for kid's names there now as family have stuck with classics so you'll know better, I think for the girl's names you can pretty much get away with anything, but maybe when it comes to boy's names keep in mind the wonderfully friendly affectionate teasing way of showing love where you live now!

Little people are fine, but once I got to university we were a free for all of that kind of love! I had a wonderful time with wonderful friends, but goodness was there a lot of joking around. I wouldn't want any easy opportunities with my name:)

Cosmoa · 26/06/2018 18:35

I'm surprised you don't have the Japanese name/word Sakura on your girls list!
