Woody

If you hear the name Woody, do you think of
A) woodpecker
B) toy story
C) Allen

Or none of them. I love the name. So does DH. We are Fine with Toy Story connection and confident that only the older generation will make the link to woodpecker. But would hate an association with Woody Allen. It hadn’t occurred to me until DM helpfully pointed it out (because she doesn’t like what she calls ‘out there names’ and would name a boy David or James, which are perfectly fine. But not what I like personally).

He would be William on birth certificate but don't want that as every day name because a) there are already 4 in the family and b) I just know it will get shortened by someone to Billy which I really do not like. Thank you

Sorry for all the typos.
Edward is a perfectly nice name but not enough that I would consider it.

Our DD has a birth certificate name but it always known since birth by nn and nursery, and preschool and now school only ever use nn. She has never been introduced as birth certificate name and lots of people don’t even know she has it.

So would adopt the same for woody / William. I really really do not like Billy, as per pp so won’t consider using William for everyday because of that. Someone will at some point just do it. My mum prevented a shortening she hates of name for about 20 years, but eventually I have become known as the abbreviation.

First thought was Bay City Rollers, then Allen.

I'd assume a surname of Wood, and wouldn't expect it to be a nickname derived from any forename. I've only heard of it for an erection on mumsnet.

mamansnet · 24/06/2018 22:33

Well if it's found enough for Woody Harrelson...

BevBrook · 24/06/2018 22:36

I think Woody Guthrie. Just to be different. I think its fine as a nickname, although not sure it is really a nn for William, that seems a trifle forced.

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/06/2018 22:39

Toy story/ harrelson/ bay city rollers/Zoe ball

FrogCow · 24/06/2018 22:42

Namethatchange · 24/06/2018 22:51

Erection

Toy story
Harrelson

ManInTheMoonMarigold · 24/06/2018 23:26

Erection.

My neighbours have a William shortened to Willy and an Edward known as Woody (plus another child with an unfortunate, but thankfully not penis related, shortening), and I always wonder why they have allowed this to happen.

"I think it’s unlikley that his granny or uncle will bully him/tease him about his name"

No but then they won't be in the play ground with him.
Is woody a kick name for William? I've never head it shortened to that before.

letsallhaveanap · 24/06/2018 23:33

If hes actually called William and its just a nickname then thats okay I guess.
BUT Willy- Woody.... hmmmmm

EyeDrops · 24/06/2018 23:36

Toy story
Allen
Harrelson

And now I can't get erection out of my head either, sorry!

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 24/06/2018 23:41

First thought was the actor Woody Harrelson.

FaultySpice · 24/06/2018 23:54

Love it but not having any more DC so hoping to use it for a dog Grin

isitfridayyet1 · 24/06/2018 23:55

Woody Allen - which isn't a good thing I'm afraid!

victoriaspongecake · 24/06/2018 23:58

I would wonder what his proper name was. Woody sounds to me like a nick name a ten year old would call a friend whose surname was wood.

HJL2506 · 25/06/2018 06:01

Yes I do think of toy story BUT you can find things that can almost "out you off" any name.

Milo being a dogs name

Oliver as in "Oliver Twist".

Anybody can be nasty about any name, though Woody isn't a name I would choose, I don't hate it at all. You need to go with your gut :)

Soloooo · 25/06/2018 06:04

These comments would put me off.

Vitalogy · 25/06/2018 06:07

The actor Woody Harrelson.

Vitalogy · 25/06/2018 06:09

*his full name is Woodrow Tracy Harrelson.

Cinderella2018 · 25/06/2018 06:15

Woody woodpecker is long past, Woody Allen I wouldn’t have thought of if your mother hadnt mentioned it!

Yes, Toy Story, was my first thought, but great name!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/06/2018 06:22

I know a 4yo Woody with beautiful curly blond hair. His little brother is called Buddy. I think it’s cute - and have only connected it to Toy Story.

ObiJuanKenobi · 25/06/2018 06:39

Erection here too

Then Toy Story

Cinderella2018 · 25/06/2018 06:43

Erection?

strawberrypenguin · 25/06/2018 06:43

Allen then Toy Story. It's not a 'usual' shortening of William either is it? Will/Bill/Billy even Liam but Woody isn't

hungryhippie · 25/06/2018 06:44

First I would think of Toy Story and then that maybe it was a nickname and his surname was Wood.
