Is it too girly?

Sorry to post again about this but not telling people IRL so don’t have anyone to bounce my thoughts off.
Only name that myself and OH have agreed on for our son is Rowan. I posted about it and got positive comments but now I’m concerned it’s too ‘girly’
If you heard of a baby called Rowan would be be surprised to find he was a boy? Do you think it is a name that is going to be used more frequently for girls soon such as Evelyn, Aubrey, Lesley etc...
Thank you in advance!

The only Rowans I know are girls (one age 11 and one 7). I wouldn't think it strange or girly for a boy at all though.

SequinsOnEverything · 23/05/2018 18:32

I know 1, a woman and if she ever emails anyone they always think she's a man. I was expecting a man the first time I met her.

duchessofsussex · 23/05/2018 18:32

I only know female Rowans. I know a male Rohan though which I think is lovely

bridgetreilly · 23/05/2018 18:33

It can definitely be both, though I personally prefer it for a girl, but I wouldn't assume that it was.

Racecardriver · 23/05/2018 18:33

Rowan is a male name in my mind.

noideawithboysnames · 23/05/2018 18:59

Phew! Great to see it is mainly considered male or a perfectly acceptable unisex name!!

Definitely more male. It's a gorgeous name.

deste · 23/05/2018 20:55

I was under the impression male Rowan is pronounced Rohan and female Rowan, sounds like Now an.

Marcipex · 23/05/2018 21:14

Rohan for a boy.
I know five girls called Rowan. Well, girls, the oldest is 55, so girls or women.
I'd assume you'd planned for a girl tbh. Like a boy I know called Willow, who they thought would be a girl, so they called him Willow anyway.

Peachy92 · 23/05/2018 21:15

Would assume boy! I didn't realise how hard it would be to find a boy name we like and isn't too popular 🙁

noideawithboysnames · 23/05/2018 21:23

@Marci but it was a boys name first-unlike Willow :/

Would presume boy. Would be more surprised it was a girls name, although like i5 for either.

BikeRunSki · 23/05/2018 21:31

I’ve probably met 6 or 7 Rowans. Only 1 was a girl. I accept it’s a unisex name, but probably expect a boy when I hear it.

Daphnedolittle · 23/05/2018 21:34

Have you seen the website darkgreener.com? You can see the rank of a name for girls and boys and how many children were named it over the last 20 years.
In 2016 Rowan was given to 619 boys and only 93 girls.
There's your answer Smile

feliciabirthgiver · 23/05/2018 22:12

Boys name for sure

Buntysoven · 23/05/2018 22:36

I know 3 male Rowans 1 in his forties one in his 20s and 1 who is 3! I dislike it for a girl because to me it is a strong male name

Belindabauer · 23/05/2018 22:49

I only know male Rowans.

RosieCotton · 23/05/2018 22:52

I know of two Rowan and both of them are little boys. I wouldnt of thought it was a girls name at all.

Joeybee · 23/05/2018 22:52

It's not too girly at all. I think it's a really nice, underused name. apparently people are starting to consider it as a unisex name, but I think basically people will almost consider any boys name as a potential girls name now.

Rohan is a completely different name to us so isn’t a consideration.

We are going to go with Rowan James.

Thanks for all the responses!

I know a boy and a girl both called Rowan, but I knew the boy first so always think of it as a boys name.

MammieBear · 24/05/2018 09:03

Boy written all over it to me...

MrsJayy · 24/05/2018 09:06

I wanted it for a girl but dh didn't like it anyway it is a lovely name and more unisex than girly imo.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 24/05/2018 09:07

My ds 16 is Roan and loves it!!
