Rufus, Monty, Magnus ???

Baby is due in a few months but struggling with boy's names. We have a few front runners but can see issues with each of them:

Rufus (too dog?)
Monty (too pretentious?)
Magus (too Scandinavian? Lack of nice nicknames....mags etc)

Do you think out concerns re our fav names are justified?

We also like names like Oscar, Freddie, Harry etc but they are v popular and keen to find something unusual but not too "out there".

Help!

I love Monty. Like Monty Don! (I believe his full name is Montague)

ellalouise90 · 21/05/2018 16:19

Magnus is so cute! Very unusual but seems to me like a very old fashioned name which I absolutely love!

MikeUniformMike · 21/05/2018 18:41

Magnus seems to get shortened to Gus on here. I suspect it is more popular than you think. I like it. Monty is cute, could be short for Montagu, Montague or Montgomery or Montpellier or something.

toffee1000 · 21/05/2018 20:10

My brother is Rufus. We’ve never met a dog with the name. The most popular dog names these days are things like Max, Archie, Toby etc, which are also common human names. Rufus doesn’t even make it into the 100 top dog names list.
Monty is OK, although probably bit posher than Rufus (IMO) esp if short for Montgomery.
Magnus is OK, has a slightly Swedish/Scandinavian touch to me.

CheshireDing · 21/05/2018 20:15

We have a Monty (aged 4), he is a very cool dude :)

RavenLG · 21/05/2018 20:17

Rufus (and Monty) are too dog imo. I know people with both.
Magnus reminds me of Mrs. Honey's dad from Matilda and the floating painting running Trunchbull out of the house.

buttercup54321 · 21/05/2018 20:19

Magnus or Augustus on bc with Gus as nn.
Monty and Rufus = dogs

CheshireDing · 21/05/2018 20:20

Sorry should say official he is Montgomery so he has choices when he is older) but everybody knows him as Monty.

We had Otto and Arlo on the list too.

Bagsalot · 21/05/2018 20:25

Yes have a Rufus and Montgomery was top of our list for ages and we would have shortened to Monty. MIL stated to dh that Rufus was a dogs name when he was born but she wisely said nothing of the sort to me

Bagsalot · 21/05/2018 20:26

*we have a Rufus not yes!

AvoidingDM · 21/05/2018 20:28

Monty- python say no more.

Got a friend with a horse Magnus and another friend with a dog Rufus.

Magnus makes me think of Magnus Magnusson and master mind.

Rufus goes ruff ruff.

Sorry Op but the only one I'd consider is Magnus I can't think how a child would be tormented with it.

Bythebeach · 21/05/2018 20:28

I’ve a Rufus .... we’ve met a couple of dogs named Rufus but it just makes us laugh. Plus our dog has a human name! Mine is a teen so in his age group there are v few - no others in primary and none in his year of 160 at secondary so I’ve enjoyed it being unusual but not weird and he has never needed his surname to identify him like all the Charlies and Sam at school/clubs which he thinks is a bonus!

LaMigraine · 21/05/2018 20:32

ChesireDing I know a dog called Arlo!

Our son is a Rufus and I did resist it for a couple of weeks as although I loved it, it felt too 'dog' to me (the only Rufus I'd ever met previously was a Dobermann Grin . He's 5 now and I can't imagine having chosen anything else - lots of people have said it's a great name over the years, and I agree. So glad I got over myself!

VioletCharlotte · 21/05/2018 20:37

Rufus and Monty are both too dog I think. I quite like Magnus actually, but I think it's becoming pretty popular.

A few ideas for you -
Felix (too cat?)
Toby
Rory
Oscar
Jonah (my favourite)

TawandaT · 21/05/2018 20:45

It's a solid list of names if you it was a puppy you were naming. Sorry, OP. Reuben?

LucyJ61 · 21/05/2018 21:43

Love Monty!

Joeybee · 21/05/2018 21:51

Love Magnus! I don't think it's too Scandi at all. Magnus is such a cool name. I'm surprised it's not more popular actually.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 21/05/2018 21:55

💙 Rufus, or how about Rex ?

TobysAunt · 21/05/2018 23:08

Barnaby.

17caterpillars1mouse · 22/05/2018 07:27

I really love Rufus and I like Magnus

Not a fan of Monty. I imagine it would be one to pull off. Though I do love Monty Don

AnyaMoondial · 22/05/2018 08:22

Like them all. Magnus is my favourite though, it's amazing!

InkSnail · 22/05/2018 08:25

I like Magnus and Rufus. Monty sounds drippy to me.

FizzyGreenWater · 22/05/2018 12:03

Magnus. It's lovely, and interesting, but a good solid old name.

Rufus is nice, bit doggy.

Monty quite fashionable and very trying hard to be off-the-wall. So although it's quite nice it's super pretentious.

sonnyboo · 22/05/2018 12:20

I like them all! Also like Felix and Quentin which feel similar.

merlottime · 22/05/2018 12:37

I know a couple of dogs called Monty too. How about Marcus?
