Why do people think of George Osbourne when they hear Gideon, feel like I've missed something its only a middle name isn't it, surely you'd associate him more with the name George?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/05/2018 23:26

His birth name is actually Gideon Oliver Osborne. However he hated it and changed it to George by poll when he was 13. Oh hey George Osborne expert. Grin. Think that's my que to get out more.
I think people associate him with Gideon rather than George because it is so unusual
I mean George's are everywhere aren't they.

Zoflorabore · 20/05/2018 23:34

Bible.

As an aside though I think it's an awful name, poor child will forever hate his name.

I hardly ever comment on baby names but this is bad.
Apologies if I've caused offence but this is MN and people will be brutally honest.

George Osborne is referred to as Gideon in a disparaging, mocking way.

Standardpubquizname · 21/05/2018 10:02

It all makes sense now Babyspider, thanks for the explanation :)

TheFatkinsDiet · 21/05/2018 10:23

I love it! But I think I remember it being unpopular on here. My dh hates it too and snort laughed when I suggested it. I don’t get the hate tbh (except the George osbourne thing, but most people know him as George anyway).

Roomba · 21/05/2018 10:25

Osborne, sorry.

I do know a lovely Gideon though, he's in his 30s and quite easily the most beautiful man I've ever seen Blush. So that was my main association before the former Chancellor came along.

Roomba · 21/05/2018 10:28

Oh yes, there's The Archers connection too.

It's a shame really, it's quite a lovely sounding name but, like Silas (love that name too) it seems to get associated with non positive things and is seems as a very posh toff name.

JasonDerulo · 21/05/2018 10:28

Looks like hideous

wtf2018 · 21/05/2018 10:31

I don't think it's going to catch on in the way other biblical names that were unusual are now fashionable and I'd be worried about teasing tbh

MammieBear · 21/05/2018 10:32

I like the name not so much the meaning.

littlemisscomper · 21/05/2018 10:36

it makes me think of feeling 'giddy', like dizzy.

Looselytranslated · 21/05/2018 10:36

I really like it. I also like Silas and Solomon. He'd get called 'Giddy' as a teenager but he might be cool with that.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 21/05/2018 11:13

I really like it, might add it to my list!
