Mary or Marie?

Do you prefer Mary or Marie?
I really don't like Maria so that's not even going to be considered!

Mary, but Marie is nice too.

I think I'm in the minority but prefer Marie!

I'm relatively young and I'd much rather be called Mary than Marie. I disagree that Marie is more modern.

Mary but prefer Maria as it sounds a little more classier like Anna instead of Anne.

I like both, but Mary is best.

I love Mary but have heard the vagina thing too and it put me off. Maria is nicer than Marie, it's on my list!

I don’t think of Marie as modern at all. I know several in their 40s and 50s so I classify it alongside Susan, Carol, Sandra etc. I think it’s a generation away from sounding fresh again. I do know a very cool 20-something Mairi, however.

Conversely, I know a couple of elderly Marys (80+) and one lovely teenage one. I’ve heard the vagina slang on MN but I’ve lived in the south east, north west, and Midlands of the UK and never heard anyone use it. Perhaps it’s a regional or generational thing.

Sorry, I should have said England, not the UK - although I also have family in north Wales and have never heard it there!

Marie is pretty !

I love Mary. As someone upthread says being Irish I have several Aunt Mary's (2 blood relations, 2 by marriage!) so I can't use it really. But if I was in England without a huge glut of Mary's in my life I would!
