Stuck on a boys name!

If DD had popped out as a DS she'd have been called Joesph. We have number 2 on the way and have plenty of inspiration for girls names but we're completely stumped on boys names. I like Joseph (and classic biblical names) but want something less popular... any ideas?

Congratulations. Go with Joseph. It's lovely and won't date.

MrsHathaway · 12/05/2018 20:37

Old Testament Biblical names are pretty popular for boys at the moment, particularly Noah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Reuben, Benjamin, even Levi, Elijah and Nathaniel.

I think it would be tricky to stay biblical without going a bit too far the other way. There's a reason nearly nobody uses Zebulon or Ezekiel nowadays (in the UK at least).

That said, maybe:

Asher
Daniel
David

Or go more NT and look at

Andrew
John
Peter

Stick with Joseph. It's classic, suits through each stage of life. It's very heard of yet not too over done.

MsP0b · 12/05/2018 20:58

Benjamin if not Joseph

Joseph is gorgeous and not too popular among kids. I'd definitely stick with it

Thanks everyone for your replies/suggestions.

Those of you who say stick with Joseph have won me over to it a little more but it being number 22 in popularity is still putting me off a bit (although I don't recall meeting any at toddler groups yet!?) We have a while to go to sound it out. Others on the list are Zachariah, Seth and Benedict from your suggestions. I'll keep rereading the other suggestions and see if any stick! Lots I love but names that are already used by friends and family. Thank you

I go to a lot of baby clubs and have a few friends with babies at the moment- I have not met one Joseph! I will say it is very popular among 14/15 year olds (I'm a secondary teacher) but in younger years it doesn't feature so heavily. I think it's a lovely name!

BB2018 · 13/05/2018 08:40

We were put off a couple of our favourite names due to popularity, but then some people will tell you they know 4 little ones with that name and others know none at all. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s luck of the draw, and we’ll have to go with the name we love.

Joseph is a great name btw, I’d go with it!

I wouldn’t worry too much about the popularity of the name, especially if it’s outside the top ten. My dd is now in the sixth form and her name was number 20ish in the names list when she was born. There were no other children with her name in the whole of her primary school for all of her time there and for most of her time at secondary. In year 12, she was very indignant that a girl joined with her name in Year 7.....I worried that she would be constantly confused with other kids but it hasn’t happened.

Agreed: DC1's name was Top Twenty and he's the only one in his school, and usually the only one anyone knows. Meanwhile DC2 is also Top Twenty and he's one of three in his class; but DC3 is Top Fifty and is also likely to be one of three in his class. You can't predict what will happen very locally even if you do keep track of general regional/national trends.

DC2 ADORES being one of three s in his class. They've made themselves a little club. And although we're expecting three of DC3 in his class (starts in September, class list not confirmed) they're known by different nicknames, equivalent to three Isabelles being Isabelle, Bella and Izzy.

Missing the point of the thread slightly, but... Zebulon! How amazing! Would never use it, but wow!
