A sibling for Edith and Douglas

We’re got a third on the way, and are really struggling with boys’ names. For girls we like Marigold, Maud and Pearl. We are not finding out the baby’s sex, so want to have a couple of boy’s names ready as well.

Edith is sometimes Edie and Douglas is sometimes Doug or Dougie.

Our surname is 5 syllables long (double barrelled) and starts with an N. So we don’t want a name starting with E, D, or N. We like names which are instantly recognisable, easy to spell, but not that commonly found (we thought Edith was less common than it’s turned out to be!), and fairly old-fashioned. We also like names with a recognisable diminutive that we will use interchangeably with the full version.

Names that we like but can’t use include Gerald, William, Grover, Donald, Raymond and anything with ‘bert’ in it.

Any suggestions?

Grover makes me think of Rover. Sad

But do kids today still watch Sesame Street? Probably not! Grover is just a name to them.

Grover. I don’t know. I do sort of like it, but it’s too brave for me.

Maud is lovely. Also like Hester, Ada, Millicent and Hebe for girls

As for boys - not sure!

MrsDilber · 04/05/2018 18:53

I have a William. Grow up now, but he can be a Bill, Billy, Will - even Liam.

I still love it.

Has anyone mentioned Ernest?
Great name.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Lots to think about and discuss with DH
