AIBU.... Name suggestions for girl

User2501x · 03/05/2018 10:33

I have 11 weeks to go but trying to have 3 or so names both me and DP agree on which is proving difficult. He liked Maya which has grew on me but now he is leaning towards Ella. Again this is a name I like BUT my friends little girl is Ella. I’ve seen this friend twice in about 8 years but was a childhood friend so I’m thinking it’s probablg unreasonable to use but these are the only names we have so far.
Second name is a short extremely common surname. We like short two syllable names, anyone any suggestions I can put to DP? I like something a bit more uncommon but not too out there either? DS is Ollie

Merge them to myla? Or Mila?

PotterGrangerWeasley · 03/05/2018 10:57

I think calling her Ella would be fine if you don't see each other a lot. Though it is quite similar to ollie. I love Maya.

Again I love Myla but a friends little girl is this too but it’s someone I work with and see often so can’t use it!

Thank you for suggestions, I’ll have a good look at them

There’s a brand called OllieElla isn’t there? Also, you like uncommon names but your son is Ollie??? I like the Maya/Mila suggestion, I don’t know any little Mayas. Congratulations!

DougFargo · 03/05/2018 13:54

Ella and Ollie? Nah. Plus every other girl in England is called Ella.

knackeredpigeon · 03/05/2018 13:59

I have a Maya Grace. Don't know any others Smile

User2501x · 03/05/2018 14:11

I think maya remains top! And thank you

I like names that aren’t that common yes and my son is 8. When I named him Ollie I didn’t know of any other Ollies so to me it was uncommon and I’m pointing out that I’d like a name that there isn’t going to be loads of in DDs class etc when she gets older.

I live in Scotland, there is a few Ella’s I’ve heard of but maybe it’s not as popular as it is in England. Hopefully one sticks out as a clear winner! I don’t want anything too unusual but as I say I just don’t one Dd to have same name as a lot of her peers etc

My Maya's teacher is Scottish, and Maya loves the way she pronounces her name Grin

Andthatsthat · 03/05/2018 14:16

I don’t see a problem in using Ella if you like it, but equally Maya is pretty.

What about other El names?

Maya is more popular than you think and has been climbing the charts. So there may not be many Maya's yet but I'm sure there will be.

My friend works for the council and warned me off it as they have seen it pop up loads lately. It's also the name my midwife said she has seen pop up a lot. Along with Aria!

It's the main reason I haven't chosen it for my lil one due in a few weeks!

User2501x · 04/05/2018 11:13

This is what happened with my DS! I didn’t know any Ollies especially with that spelling, so much so when I registered him she actually asked me was I sure lol! Then all of a sudden there was so many and such a popular name!

Maya and Aria were my two favourites too! Nothing seems to click like Maya so far but I don’t know if I’ve just got used to it as it was only name we both liked throughout! It’s so difficult

How about Kaya/Kaia? It's one of my absolute favourites and I'm saving it for my next DD if I ever have a second!

Gonna wait and see bow popular it gets as I have a feeling it'll rise in the next 5 years...

You could always go for a longer name and use Ella as the nickname?

Gabriella
Fenella
Mariella
Isabella

All pretty, some more popular than others!

Baubletrouble43 · 04/05/2018 22:26

Just popped on to suggest Inez. Or is that ines? I heard it today and decided that's what I will call fictional dd4 who will never happen!

I really like Maya but I love Aria. Have you discounted that?

Are you pronouncing Maya 'May-a' or 'My-a'. I know lots of 'My-as' (spelt either Maya or Maia) but no 'May-as' so if you want unusual I'd go with 'May-a'

How about:
Aliya, Ayla, Alba, Ama, Asha, Aphra, Briar, Cara, Cora, Clea, Dana, Daya, Elina, Elisa, Elia, Enya, Efa, Hanna, Hera, Iara, Iona, Jaya, Jayla, Kyla, Kyra, Kaia, Lia, Livia, Lara, Lyra, Lila, Lena, Lola, Luna, Mia, Mala, Mila, Mika, Nia, Nyah, Nala, Nora, Noa, Orla, Pippa, Priya, Piya, Ria, Rosa, Sara, Siya, Tia, Taya, Tara, Tessa, Una, Vita, Willa, Zara, Zia

ABitOTT · 07/05/2018 22:51

I also have a DS with a mega popular name. It wasn't as well known when we chose it 22 years ago; however I still love it as much as I did when we picked it. In other words if you like the name Maya, (I know of or have heard of quite a few), then you choose it.

The reason certain names are picked more often is because they are well liked. That means you have good taste.

Ollie & Maya sounds great together.
