Best and worst names...

Well I'm off work, in bed and all this royal stuff has got me thinking. Entertain me... what are your most and least favourite names?

I've always loved Emma and Oscar. I like Rowan for a boy too if we're talking a little more modern.

I can't stand double barrelled names such as Ellie-May, Lexi-Grace, Demi-Rae, Tayah-Mae etc.

Thoughts?

Agree with pp, cringe at double barrel names using Mae/May or when it’s used as a middle name.

If I had another little girl I’d name her Susannah Marigold and nickname her Sunny. If I had to name another little boy I’d call him Nathaniel James.

I like so many names! I really don’t like names like Brixleigh, etc…we have a lot of those kinds here in the states. But whatever floats your boat.

I dislike anything with May/Mae, Anne or Leigh tagged on the end of a first name. Also common names spelled strangely to be ‘unique.’ I also dislike the old lady/man names that are coming back into fashion.

I like underused classics - there are so many beautiful names outside the top 500!

I hate overused names like Alfie, Archie, Oliver, Jack, Theo, Harry, Ellie, Evie etc

If I had a girl she would have been named after something like a beautiful colour/flower or jewel. So I like anything such as Ruby, Pearl, Amber, Iris, Rose, Violet etc...

I always liked Douglas for a boy, Duggie for short but DH hated it so went with something else. Also really like Thomas but can't explain why. Just realised typing this out that both names end in the same sound.

I don't like Octavia/Ophelia or Constance/Prudence. Think they're just very over the top and I'm definitely not posh enough to use them. And Felix which is also popular on here but a cat food brand to me.

I don't truly hate many names, but there is something about the sound of some words and the images of those sounds that really put me off a few names.

Moira. Too similar to moist.
Maeve. It just sounds so unfinished to me! Really awkward sounding, but everyone else I know loves it!
Mildred. Too similar to mildew.
Eglantine. Makes me think rotten eggs.
Jamie. I have no reason for hating this name so much, I know it's illogical. I think it's something about the "mee" sound. I dislike Mia and Amelia too.

I love a lot of 70/80s names. Jennifer, Sarah, Gemma, David etc. Also harder sounding names are nicer to me than soft names.

I love names such as Poppy, Matilda, Florence, Amelia, Eliza/ Elizabeth, Freya, Iris, Kelly, Rosa/Rose
Sebastian, Oliver, Sidney, Albert,

I can’t stand: Oscar, Billy, Jonathan/Johnathan, Tommy, Matthew, Mark, Arthur, Ronnie, Stanley, Lara, Jessica, Kiki, Bella

Love:

Lara
Audrey
Annie
Violet
Alice

Alex
Owen
Ivor
Elliot
Lawrence
Seth

Dislike:

long, fussy girls names such as Arabella, Theodora etc. Or any hyphenated girls name of the Georgie-May type ilk.

Imogen - sounds like a detergent

Also
Hugo
Nicholas - (this is a totally irrational loathing - I just hate the sound.)

But it would be boring if we all liked the same stuff. Each to their own....

Best name- I like Hamish

Worst name- anything which presents the child as purely an extension of the parent's identity rather than a person in their own right, eg naming your child after yourself or after a celebrity you think is cool but for all you know may get Yewtree'd (or the posthumous equivalent) in a few years time.
