Morning all

Following on from your excellent suggestions regarding unusual girl names with at least three syllables, we have whittled our preferred girl names to a final three:

Arabella
Hermione
Verity

Those of you who contributed may see that two of these names (Verity, Hermione) had previously been discounted by DH but your lists helped to bring these back into focus and change his mind, so your assistence has had a measurable effect!

Consequently, I kindly ask if people could rank these names in order of preference. I cannot decide which of these is my number one. My concern with Arabella, is that she will just be called Bella latter on, which although a lovely nn is quite common now. Regarding Hermione, is this still too Harry Potter-esk?

All contributions will be greatly received.

Verity. I don't like the others at all.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/04/2018 13:33

I like Arabella the most. Yes she may get Bella sometimes but I think it would be avoidable. I know Isabella's who go by there full names

I like Hermione alot but not is very Harry potter

Not a fan of Verify. It feels very serious

TheFace · 23/04/2018 21:05

Arabella is my favourite from your list but don't discount Hermione because of Harry Potter. Harry has been in the top 10 boys names for years now. Why should Hermione be any different? Plus, what a great bad ass character to share a name with.

LoveInTokyo · 23/04/2018 21:44

Verity is lovely.

Hermione is a nice name in itself but you will get a lot of Harry Potter comments. Hermione Granger is a great character though, so why not? Just something to bear in mind if you think it might annoy you.

Can’t stand Arabella.

Smoliver · 23/04/2018 22:16

I love Hermione and Arabella. Verity is nice too, but I just like the other two more.

SoftSheen · 23/04/2018 22:21

I vote for Arabella- strong and elegant.

Mollie85 · 25/04/2018 16:34

Romilly by a mile

The other three are not nice sounding (to my ears).

Have you done the calling the name up the stairs "test"?

"Hermione, tea's readddddy!"

Love Verity

qumquat · 25/04/2018 19:34

I love Hermione.
I'm a bit meh about Verity
I really dislike Arabella (possibly because I teach a really naughty one)

qumquat · 25/04/2018 19:35

I've just realised I also teach a Hermione who is also naughty but clearly my love of the name is strong enough to withstand that!

Elmo303 · 25/04/2018 21:32

Verity is lovely but Hermione is the stand out name for me. I think it’s really special. I wouldn’t worry about HP, people might make the connection for two seconds then it’ll be forgotten about. Arabella for me is too trendy and a bit fussy. After three kids though I’ve learnt that the things you worried about when trying to choose a name before the baby is born don’t seem anywhere near as important after they’re here and in the end you just wish you chose the name you genuinely loved as that’s all that really matters. Try asking yourself: if I could choose any name in the world for my little girl regardless of perceived associations or what other people may think what would it be? That’s your answer. Good luck!

Cockmagic · 25/04/2018 21:34

Hermione , I think of Shakespeare myself!

The others seem very pretentious or like diseases...

Pompom42 · 25/04/2018 21:34

Hermione for me. I know a few arabella and yes they are all Bella.
I don't mind Verity I know and adult called that and people call her V

Fridasfridgefreezer · 25/04/2018 21:42

Hermione.

Ruthshaw1980 · 28/04/2018 11:58

Hugh thank you to everyone who posted and gave their views, your help is so much appreciated. Not surprisingly there is no clear winner and also all three names appear to be a bit marmite.

However DH being DH has now decided that he doesn’t particularly like any of these now or those from the bigger list......ahhhhhhhhh!!!!

It appears that he prefers 2 syllable names whilst I like at least 3. This is a big problem but the benefit of a shorter name is that it is less likely to be shortened which I can see the attraction of. Thus I need your help again and have started a new thread Confused
