What do you think of my shortlist?

I have found out I'm having a baby boy!
so now I get to narrow down names. It's taken a long time to get here.
This is my list, what do you think/are there any other names you think I might like also?

Samuel
William (Bill)
Alexander
Albert (Bertie)
Arthur
Hugo
Matthew (Mattie)

My surname is quite long so it's important to me that my child won't have to spell out his first name all the time, because he will have to always spell out the surname! So needs to be an easy name to spell/say. Also surname has a strong R and W sound, so want to avoid R or strong W names.

Oh and Elliot and Nathaniel were on my list but I've completely fallen out of love with them.

blinkineckmum · 18/04/2018 05:23

I love them all except Albert and Arthur.

Love Hugo & Arthur. Congratulations!

Sophronia · 18/04/2018 05:54

Christopher
Isaac
Joseph
Laurence
Nicholas
Peter
James
Luke
Miles
Zachary

Congratulations! My favourites are Arthur and Matthew! Let us know what you chose x

felicitythemangyfox · 18/04/2018 06:07

Congratulations! I like all of your list except Hugo (too "posh" sounding for my taste) and my favourite is Sam.

Peachbubble · 18/04/2018 06:16

I like Arthur and Hugo.

RoundaboutSnail · 18/04/2018 08:51

They're all great names on you list OP. I like Alexander and William best.

Julian or Elijah? Congratulations. Also the names on your list are all nice.

Spam88 · 18/04/2018 10:16

I love Samuel, but it's not a name we're able to use. Also think Alexander is great Smile

pilates · 18/04/2018 16:42

Great names except for Hugo. Hard to choose but probably Albert.

FusRoDah · 18/04/2018 16:48

Lots of those were on our shortlist. I like them all except Hugo (bit posh) and Albert (old man name). Not sure about the NN Mattie for Matthew, I know a couple of Matties and they're girls (Matilda)

Also like Joseph, Anthony, James, Daniel, Isaac, Zachary

PinkCalluna · 18/04/2018 16:52

I don’t like Albert or Arthur but the others are all great.

bridgetreilly · 18/04/2018 17:20

In order, I like:

Samuel
Arthur
Albert (Bertie)
Alexander
Hugo
William (Bill)
Matthew (Mattie)

But they're all good choices!

TroubledLichen · 18/04/2018 17:25

In order I like:
Hugo
Arthur
Alexander
Albert
Samuel
William (only because of the NN Bill though, if he’d be Will then I’d move it up to near the top of the list)
Matthew (Mattie is awful, especially for a boy as it’s a girl’s name)

Carouselfish · 19/04/2018 01:03

I like all yours except Hugo (can only ever be a Tim Nice But Dim type) and Samuel. Although I like Sam, it's the muel (mule, gruel, mewling) sound I don't like.

Joeybee · 19/04/2018 01:51

Thanks for all your fab replies guys,
There are a lot of good names people have suggested and it's definitely given me food for thought.

@Talith Joseph is a lovely name, but my Husband calls me Jo all the time (short for Joanna) and I think Joseph would be just a bit too close to that for him.

@Sophronia OMG it kills me that I can't use Benjamin, as it's a name I have always loved However it's my nephews name, so it puts me off. Same with Daniel.
I really like Miles/Myles and Nicholas but there's no way my Husband will be sold on those names. Alfred, Edward, Zachary and Henry have too strong R sounds, so they clash with my surname unfortunately. (Harry is a name I love but can't use for the same reason).

@RoundaboutSnail I really like Michael, but worry it's a little too dated. I think a lot of people in their 40's and 50's are called this name. However I do find myself coming back to that name.

@gwen25 OMG Martin....I keep coming back to that name. I just think it's a really sweet name, and Marty is a gorgeous nickname. It's also a strong sounding name. My Husband says it's too dated, that it'd be like calling a baby Ian or Barry! I totally am going to try and convince him about Martin though as I can really imagine it.

Oh and with regards to Mattie as a nn for Matthew. I am British but emigrated to Australia 5 years ago. I totally get that Mattie doesn't really work in the UK and isn't used for boys. However in Australia a lot of Matthews are called Matti, so it's a lot more normal. Infact I don't think I'm aware if a Matthew who isn't a Mattie.
