Thoughts on James? Similar names?

I've always had a huge list for girl names, but James is the only boy's name I've ever really liked. DP thinks it's so-so and feels like we should have a couple more as back-ups but honestly I just can't seem to find any. I like timeless, classic names for boys but on the lists I have been googling I keep coming back to James! Thoughts?

I love it. As you say, a timeless classic and not overused atm. I only know one 5 year old, the rest are adults.

I like James, a little vanilla for my taste but it is definitely a lovely, timeless name. Jamie is a cute nn too!

Other suggestions would be:
Nicholas
Oscar
Henry
Josef
Ezra
Nathaniel
Preston
Christian
Spencer
Julian
Charles
Philip

James is a lovely classic name. It's the most popular middle name for boys, but you don't hear it as much as a first name.

I love classic names too and James is one of my favourites. Go for it!

I adore James, perhaps Edward as a back up?

Madbengalmum · 15/04/2018 13:28

James and Edward are my favourite boys names.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/04/2018 13:34

I'd have to disagree about it being underused ATM. Throughout my 42 years of life ive always been tripping over them and now isn't am exception.

So yes it is extremely popular and he will very likely be one of the many James amongst his peers. However will popular it's also classy carries you well through life and is not faddy, therefore will never date.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/04/2018 13:37

Other ideas to consider, though.
Samuel. Charles. Andrew. Daniel. Matthew.
Richard. Benjamin. Arthur. Alexander.
Christopher. William

Ha This has been totally me OP with both my pregnancies - though I have two dds. Other names I liked (not as much) were Edward, Keir, Euan, Alex. But I think if I'd had a ds he would have ended up being James, and it would have been a good choice I think - I love it. The only downside is that there are a lot around - of all ages though, rather than all babies.

James is a lovely name. There's a reason why some names are timeless.

DramaAlpaca · 15/04/2018 13:42

James is my all time favourite boys' name, I'd say look no further!

It's not so popular these days either.

BasilThirty · 15/04/2018 13:47

Personally I think it's incredibly full. As if there aren't enough James's in the world already!

BasilThirty · 15/04/2018 13:47

Dull not full!

Nic165 · 15/04/2018 14:41

Thanks everyone. Some great suggestions for alternatives so I'll see if we can agree on more than just James, just in case 😊

James is a gorgeous name!

ExH and I could never agree on names. Naming DS1 took ages. With DS2, I lost my patience and said that we could name the child in the same way we'd conceived the child: he'd decide the first letter and I'd do every other bit by myself. 🤣

I like James and have one. It was my grandad's name so was always going to be DS1's name. It is popular but there aren't any others among the 70 children in his year at school.

chezmk1988 · 15/04/2018 18:09

Love it. I'm biased as I have a James.

Blankscreen · 15/04/2018 18:14

I have a James and it is a classic.

It's more popular than I had realised but in his school year of 60 there is only 1 other.

I think David Ben Thomas and Edward are similarly classic names and would go for one of them if I had another boy.

OrlandaFuriosa · 15/04/2018 18:15

Love James. Not many around in the littly end. It crosses social divides as well which is useful and is easy to spell.

I love John ( v rare now) , Mark, Edward too.
