Merryn

Hi, We don't know if we're having a boy or a girl yet. Boys name is already agreed, but girls is still uncertain.
I love Meredith but OH is unsure.
We both like Juliet, so are kind of settled on that but I have niggling doubts.
With dd1 we were absolutely sure and in love with her name (Clara) but I'm just not feeling that type of reaction this time.
I'm considering suggesting Merryn to OH - I wasn't sure about it at first but its grown on me; what are people's opinions please? Does it sit well as a sibling for Clara?
Thanks

I feel like Merryn is really trying too hard, personally. Also I love Juliet and think it goes much better with Clara.

PeterRabbitEatingHisCarrot · 18/03/2018 13:45

It’s awful. Very harsh sounding.

Juliet is so much nicer.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 18/03/2018 17:53

I love it. I think Merryn Juliet is nice.

thepressureofaname · 18/03/2018 18:18

Eek it started well and went slightly downhill 😣
I can understand not everyone liking it, we all have different tastes. I can also understand people who watch GoT associating it with that. However I'd be amazed if someone who knew the GoT reference genuinely believed someone would deliberately name their baby girl after an evil male character - that's a bit bonkers 😂
I don't know what you mean about it being 'try hard' bridget. I know Merryn is uncommon but its hardly an out there choice. Dd1s name is top 100 - I don't want obscure for the sake of it, I just want a name that we can love.
I'm still wobbling over Juliet - I heard a dad call his little girl it in a park before we were even ttc and I thought it sounded beautiful and refreshing but something is holding me back.
It does sound good actually mary but we'll be having Lilian as the middle name.

It's gorgeous.

Stillnotready · 18/03/2018 18:28

I’ve never heard it before, and I think it sounds beautiful, with a timeless quality.

redmini4 · 18/03/2018 18:28

I think Merryn is a lovely, gentle sounding name and it is fine with Clara. Juliet is one of those names that I really want to like but just don't like the sound of it.

nobutreally · 18/03/2018 18:30

I love Merryn - goes well with Clara. Juliet is nice too, but if you're avoiding names which are associated with a specific fictional character, I'd have thought Juliet was more of an issue than Merryn;-) I'd certainly be a bit nervous of the Wherefore art thou' jokes if I was a Juliet!

One thing re: GoT - it's a very adult show, obv, so anyone under 18 (OK 16!) when she's born in unlikely to have watched it - so her peers won't ever make a GoT connection, even if their parents do.

Flamingoringo · 18/03/2018 18:40

I’m on a thread asking about names for my son, one of which is the name of a vampire from a well known series of books/films. A few people pointed this out, which is fine, but I’m 100% sure anyone who knows or meets me is not going to think I named my child after a character from a teenage gothic romance novel. So I doubt anyone sensible is going to think you named your child after a GoT character. (Which I’ve not seen anyway; not everyone has).

As for Merryn, it’s a lovely name. I also like Juliet.

mumofmerryn · 18/03/2018 18:51

I've nc for this - Dd is Merryn. I absolutely love it. No one has ever mentioned the GoT reference to me.

I grew up in Cornwall and have never heard of St Merryn meat either! I associate the name with the village of st Merryn, which is in a very pretty part of Cornwall.

The name means "joy" which was also an important factor for us after a difficult and stressful pregnancy.

Congratulations on your pregnancy op!

MammieBear · 18/03/2018 19:10

Brings to mind mermaids to me... You might also like Marina?...

megletthesecond · 18/03/2018 19:13

Merryn is lovely. There's one at the DC's school.

Haint · 18/03/2018 19:18

I know a beautiful 18 year old Merryn. I’ve also watched GoT and never made the association

It’s lovely. I can’t see it as “try hard” nor harsh sounding. Not at all, it’s a happy, gentle name

franksbitch · 18/03/2018 19:26

We've got a Merryn, everyone compliments us on her name.

MrsJoshDun · 18/03/2018 19:27

I love it. I’ve read all of GOT and watched the series and it doesn’t make e think of GOT at all.

lardass88 · 18/03/2018 19:27

Lovely name. I know a few merryns here in cornwall

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 18/03/2018 21:02

Thanks for your views everyone - now I have to convince OH!

windchimesabotage · 18/03/2018 21:03

Beautiful!

thepressureofaname · 19/03/2018 15:56

Hmmm OH made some fairly unenthusiastic sounds.
I think I'll not mention it again and just let him mull it over by himself for a couple of weeks, rather than labouring the point and totally turning him against it (I do think it's the kind of name that grows on you). It may all be academic anyway if the 20w scan shows it's a boy!

Fabulous.

Mooana · 21/03/2018 22:06

I love love love Merryn! Sadly my OH vetoed that one. Tragic.

Snowysky20009 · 22/03/2018 09:57

The first thing that sprang to my mind was if you used Meredith, then Merryn could be a nm. Probably 99% will disagree with me though lol

TonicClonicAndTheWaves · 22/03/2018 11:08

I love it! Meredith and Juilet are both on our shortlist, I think I'll be adding Merryn in too.

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 22/03/2018 12:51

What else is in your list tonic? We must have the same taste - inspire me!

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 22/03/2018 12:52

What is it with men being anti Meredith and Merryn grrrrr?!
