Anyone else had to discard a favourite name because it sounds ridiculous with the surname?

I've always liked the name Matthew but my DB's surname is Allen. It would end up getting called Matt Allen (Matalan, like the shop!).

Yes!!! Our surname is a colour and if I had a girl next time I love the name Skye or Sapphire, however both sound silly with a colour for a surname 😣

Elfyn · 03/03/2018 18:17

Matthew/Matt Allen is fine!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/03/2018 18:18

I had Nicole (Coco) all along while I was having DD. Until I cottoned on that her initials would have been NOB.Grin
I went with Molly in the end.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/03/2018 18:19

Matthew Allen I wouldn't have even noticed. It seems a normal straight forward name. Mind you it's stands out a mile now you point it out.

StinkPickle · 03/03/2018 18:20

What’s your surname tho? Surely in this situation you’d use your surname. Your boyfriend can’t go on about “tradition” being you use the mans name as you’re obviously not a traditional couple, in that you’re not married but having a baby.

Just use your name. Matthew is lovely.

RosieCotton · 03/03/2018 18:33

My surname is Hall. I wanted Albert after my husbands grandad but it was vetoed

LadyPug · 03/03/2018 18:41

I hear you! We are in love with Cillian but our surname is the same as a certain famous vampire family in a set of popular novels - sounds blinking ridiculous together!

ThisIslandGirl · 03/03/2018 18:46

Yep. Although I still think Rupert Blair wouldn't have been that bad Grin

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/03/2018 18:51

Love Matthew, definitely use it.

chezmk1988 · 03/03/2018 18:53

Yes. I want to use Ezra but with an R starting surname if doesn't sound right. It's my favourite boys name :(

sparkles212 · 03/03/2018 20:09

I hate my surname for starters but me and the other half are engaged to marry anyway so I want us all to have the same surnames eventually.

My favourite boys name was Flynn, but with the surname Lee it would become Flynn Lee i.e. Finley with a speech impediment.

Knittingteapot · 03/03/2018 21:16

I used to teach a Matthew Allen! And his brother Gary... This was about 5 years ago and the Matalan thing never once occurred to me or anyone else at school. If you like it, go for it.

BlackberryandNettle · 03/03/2018 21:24

Yep, the name Sophia sounds weird and very rhymey with our surname. Always liked it though.

maitaimojito · 03/03/2018 21:25

I know a Matt Allen and it had never occurred to me. I think it’s fine.

Buxbaum · 04/03/2018 09:39

‘DB’ in the OP is a typo, right?!

Matt Allen is fine. The stresses are totally different to Matalan.

sparkles212 · 04/03/2018 18:36

Yes I probably should I put OH or whatever darling fiance is. I'm not exactly down with the slang :)

17caterpillars1mouse · 04/03/2018 19:13

Yes. Adore Moses but surname also starts Mo so it just doesn't work :(

mondler · 04/03/2018 19:31

I'm in the same vote - my married surname makes it so difficult and no names seem to go well with it! My favourite ever name 'Heather' is ruled out cos it rhymes and sounds silly! gutted.

FWIW I would have never thought of Matalan!

bathandpjs · 04/03/2018 19:44

I know a Matt Allen too and it's never crossed my mind to think Matalan. Might start calling him that though Grin

Joeybee · 04/03/2018 21:15

Yep. Unfortunately my favourite boys name is Raphael...and I have a double barrelled surname, both names beginning with 'R' so I can't use a strong 'R' or 'W' name as it sounds terrible with the surname.

SnowiestMountain · 04/03/2018 21:25

Yep, I really wanted Mia for a girl but our last name also begins with M and it just doesn't go, had all the DC's we want now but older and wiser I would just go for it now!

bridgetreilly · 04/03/2018 22:04

Matt Alan doesn't sound the same as Matalan! Besides which, he might not be a Matt. Could be a Mattie or a Matthew. If that's the name you love, stick with it.
