The Anal problem

Don't worry not a misplaced thread!

My sister is due in a week and finally came up with a name she liked for her unborn baby girl: Eliana (ELI-AHNA). Her DH is mixed race so the fact the name has meanings in Arabic Hebrew Spanish was great. Just one glaring problem. Her surname begins with L, so in an age of emails and hash tags where first and surnames are typed together, the babys name would read:

ElianaLxxx (so have the word "anal" in it Blush).

She has thought of having the babys name spelt as Elianah but the "h" seems a bit random, which it all honesty would be. Elianna would be pronounced differently so she wants to avoid that.

Can anyone think of similar names that don't have this problem? Or alternative spellings to avoid the anal problem (can't believe I am actually writing thisShock)?

Elena is pronounced El-EEH-na. Stress the middle syllable.

hatefulgreatful · 03/03/2018 12:13

many Arabic names have a h on the end so it wouldn't be that random to put one on the end.
in fact my daughter's name is traditionally spelt with a H on the end and we had to take it off because her name and middle name would've spelt something not so nice when put together

You are not going to have an issue like #susanalbumparty unless your daughter goes on TV and has the misfortune of a bunch of idiots managing her PR. Honestly there are so many ways around it.

daisypond · 03/03/2018 12:35

I wouldn't have noticed the "anal". Eliana is a nice name. You could go for Elianah - but it does look a lot more Arabic like that. Or you could go for Eliane or Elianna. Elena is also nice, but it's pronounced more or less like El-EH-na. But you'll get people saying it all sorts of different ways.

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 03/03/2018 12:36

I would spell it eliannah - I think you are right to be concerned

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 03/03/2018 16:04

How about Alina as an alternative?

BroTim · 11/03/2018 10:12

Elaina

TenThousandSpoons · 11/03/2018 10:17

I would notice. What if there’s another Eliana in the class and she becomes known as Eliana L? What about Amara, Anaya, Emine, Alena?

bridgetreilly · 11/03/2018 13:09

Elianah looks fine to me. Or Elianna?

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 14/03/2018 01:00

I never heard of Eliana, it's so pretty..I wouldn't have noticed "Anal"...but if it bothers your sister/family maybe change the spelling up a bit so she still has the pretty name but without the possibility of it being "Anal"

Here are some alternative was they could spell Eliana

Eliaana
Eliaana
Eleayahna
Eliyahna
Ellieannah
Eliahna
Elyahna

If they live the name they shouldn't give it up over what might be...they could choose a plain name and their child could be mercilessly teased over it...kids always find something to tease about

blackteasplease · 14/03/2018 23:34

Elena in Spanish has a short e in the middle.

So like E-len-a.

Cosmoa · 16/03/2018 09:24

Worrying about her having a job which will make her have it written with anal in there is such a ridiculous reason to not choose the name she likes!

I've never had a personal email at a job and I doubt I ever will.. And there are plenty ways around it also. This is just a bit daft really.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 16/03/2018 09:28

My 8 year old children have email address’ already that their dad set up so chose the address’. One is formal SadieSmith@blahblah whereas my son has TheFantasticFreddie type one.... she can avoid Anal 😂 as plenty of us try to do x

Mamabear4180 · 16/03/2018 19:34

I wouldn't even consider this as a problem, that's a bit of a mad thing to worry about! Eliana is gorgeous, it's my DD's name :)

Slippery · 16/03/2018 19:37

I thought you were going to say Lana. My friend is called this and always gets some joker telling her that her name backwards is anal. As if she didn't know ........

lecossaise · 16/03/2018 19:46

There used to be the stationery website Pen Island too...

Could they spell it Eliahna? (Have just googled that and found a Facebook profile of an Eliahna L... wonder if her parents had the same issue!

pimlicolife · 16/03/2018 20:09

This is partly why I wouldn't allow my daughter to be called Lana even though I actually like the name.

But in this case I don't think I would actually notice it.

mathanxiety · 17/03/2018 21:30

You can't avoid unfortunate spellings if your employer has a certain pattern to email addresses for business related emails. You would hope that grown adults would get over themselves and move on with their lives if faced with ....anaL@whatever.

My DCs' schools have both used first initial [email protected] for all the teachers, principal, deans, counsellors and secretaries. If two teachers have the same first and surname they use first initial middle initial surname @.... There are no exceptions to the rule. I suspect that teaching is the only profession where 'anal' might provoke a little mirth.
