Caleb?

I'm picturing a Mormon.

I like most names but find Caleb really clunky and it looks like it's written backwards. It might be better in Hebrew!

pipilangstrumpf · 02/03/2018 17:12

Why is it Cay not Cah? As in calendar or Calum?

isittheholidaysyet · 02/03/2018 17:14

Kay-leb

PinkAvocado · 02/03/2018 17:16

Kay-leb. Not heard it said any other way and know a couple. I like it. biblespeak.org/caleb-pronunciation/

kirkandpetal · 02/03/2018 17:30

I'm picturing a thick member of the Dingle family. Sorry!

MongerTruffle · 02/03/2018 17:31

Because English is not a phonetic language. There is not always a direct relationship between the letters and the sounds they make.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/03/2018 17:35

I've met a small one. Cute name if very Biblical.

Definitely emphasis on first syll. which is definitely 'kay'. Then a nondescript short vowel noise in the second part. More like 'lub' to me I think. Certainly not an enunciated 'eb' sound.

Ginnotginger · 02/03/2018 17:49

Kay leb emphasis on first syllable. i've never heard it pronounced lib or lub.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2018 07:08

I know several and none of them stress the second syllable. The one you know got it wrong.
The second syllable is pronounced as a schwa, a neutral vowel sound.

The ones I know have siblings named Taylor, Tyler, Aaron, Chase, Ethan, Hayley, and Trinity. All are American. None of the families in the least churchgoing - it would have surprised them to learn the name is biblical.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2018 07:09

MaisyPops - NAY-OH-me is the only way I have ever heard Naomi pronounced. I know a few, both Irish and American.

PineappleExpress · 03/03/2018 07:15

I say it Kay-lub. Too much emphasis on the 'leb' sounds a bit odd to me, and I would never say 'lib'.
I absolutely love the name, though. Reminds me of the lovely looking guy in Pretty Little Liars Grin

Mum2OneTeen · 03/03/2018 07:17

Car-leb

deptfordgirl · 03/03/2018 07:20

Kay - Leb
I know one though and he sometimes gets Kay - lib

deptfordgirl · 03/03/2018 07:27

Oh and I love it. I love biblical names but am bored of the overused ones now.

llangennith · 03/03/2018 07:42

Nice name but the stress is on the first syllable, not the second.
KAY-leb (or lib).

MaisyPops · 03/03/2018 08:11

mathanxiety
I've hears lots of Nay-oh-mi said with the same stresses as you would Nie-oh-me.

This was weird like NAYOH-me. The first 2 were heavilly stressed and almost slide into thr space of 1 syllable and the 'me' was almost non existent.

mathanxiety · 05/03/2018 04:01

Yes, that is how the vast majority of people I have ever heard saying the name pronounce it, including the 'NAYOH-mes' that I know. The '-me' part is very unstressed.

KAY-leb
I like it - a good biblical name, the couple I know are churchgoers.

Mol1628 · 05/03/2018 06:40

Kay Leb.

I know a couple- both from very Christian families.

MaggieFS · 05/03/2018 06:46

Agree on Kay - Leb, but surely whether the second syllable is leb, lib or lub sounding depends on the accent of the person speaking?

Snipples · 05/03/2018 06:48

Kay-Leb. It's a lovely name op. We'd chosen that if our baby was a boy. But she's a girl!

Cosmoa · 05/03/2018 10:21

Hey Smile my 10 year old nephew is called Caleb he gets called Kay-leb. Sometimes when I say his name it's somewhere between Kay-leb and Kay-lib. He also gets Cali as a nickname (Which is kinda annoying as my and my DP likes Kali for a girl but can't use it!)

I adore his name and have since before he was born. It really suits him

Raisinbrain · 05/03/2018 10:29

Kay Leb

NancyClips · 05/03/2018 11:42

Kay-leb.

I think of Sister Wives. There's a Caleb in that.
