Which one do you like?
I like both and recently became fond of Penelope.
DH loves India but not Penelope.

India is a lovely name, I know/know of quite a few India's from the UK. You certainly don't need a connection.. Other than liking the name! None of the India's I know are pretentious... People say the most ridiculous things on this forum!!!

Penelope is also a really lovely name... Im quite eclectic with my taste also. But if you both like India, go for that one Smile

WillDoMama · 26/02/2018 18:02

JenniferMargaret We know three Afrikas, they spell it with a K and I was surprised to hear it as well but it is not unusual there at all. It is not the trendiest name like Sophia, Noa and Alba but an established name nevertheless

Ninjago point taken on those 2 name examples 😊 India though in the same sense originates from a word meaning river or stream in Sanskrit...

If this name choice though means we have to discuss this with many people around like here, then maybe it is not the one for us... isn’t it an established name though? Is it not a name that has been used for years in the UK? How about India Wilkes in Gone with the Wind. It is not that it is a name that people decided now in modern times to give to their children like Chicago surely

I know siblings India and Asia. India is much nicer than Penelope.
I really don’t like the name Penelope (sorry Penelopes of the world)

JenniferMargaret · 26/02/2018 18:20

I haven't ever heard it. Major city, 2 DC in school. I just looked at it's not even in top 100, I would think it very unusual if I heard it.

JenniferMargaret · 26/02/2018 18:36

Today it's like I'm living in a different country. I've never met any matching kids, families with 4,5, 6 DC or any DC called Afrika.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/02/2018 18:38

I love India. I know a few in their teens and twenties.

mintich · 26/02/2018 18:39

Penelope

Coey2016 · 26/02/2018 18:41

I prefer India, not a big fan of Penelope/Penny. I like the idea of Indie as a nickname for India.

WillDoMama · 26/02/2018 18:42

Just checked and it is actually spelled with c, it is 241 in list according to this site:

India

NC4Now · 26/02/2018 18:50

I love India and it has a special significance for me. It’s the only place name I’d consider.

Not keen on Penelope. It’s a bit geeky to me.

thefirstmrsrochester · 26/02/2018 18:50

India.

WillDoMama · 26/02/2018 18:51

JenniferMargaret Just shared in my previous listing above a link with info on Africa and its use in Spain

This forum is far from a good example of how people will act... Everyone is behind a mask on the Internet and feel free to say things they would NEVER say to someone's face. Generally people don't react this strongly to names when they hear it from the person. Having a face or voice with a name makes all the difference! It's an okay place to find names and get opinions but it's in no way a reflection of the real world in my opinion!!

WillDoMama · 26/02/2018 18:59

Cosmoa so good to hear that as the only name we both love so far, thank you 😊

Neither , sorry.
I know an India and Penelope.
I prefer India.

NinjagoNinja · 26/02/2018 20:46

Well, duh. Of course I wouldn't say to someone that I thought it was pretentious to call their child India.

I'd be thinking though.

WillDoMama · 26/02/2018 20:56

Ninjago you are not letting that go 😁
You can think all you like though...
Sometimes a person can make you love names you never thought you would...

Perceptions about names are interesting. I'm not sure what class markers India has, but the associations I have are like someone said earlier Katie Hopkins and India Willoughby. Neither very classy in my mind, but that's more to do with behaviour than social background.

I don't really like either name but Penelope has more options diminutives and a more interesting story behind it. Ideally I'd look for a name that both you and your dh love OP, so to me India would be a maybe only, and Penelope a no and I'd look for more names to choose from.

Kpo58 · 26/02/2018 21:02

India, embrace colonialism!

Seriously don't...

selftitledalbum · 26/02/2018 21:04

India is hideous

WillDoMama · 26/02/2018 21:07

Kpo58 Why? Ok I understand why that could be assumed but that is not a fact. I’m not from the UK btw either but even if I were, I would think that’s an assumption not based on facts again.
Choosing this name may simply be because I like the sound of it and the beautiful saris and open hearted people I know from there, not because I embrace colonialism

Would go for Tajikistan myself. Tonga also a good option.

Cosmoa · 26/02/2018 21:30

I think it's best to avoid discussing it on here and further if it's a name you love... Who cares what people think.. They're only thoughts in reality. It's clearly an established name whether people have a connection to it or not. Like I said, I know of quite a few India's and I've never thought anything but "what a lovely name!"

If you love it just go with it! Some people have said silly things about the names I like and all it's done it make me love them more! You're never gonna get a unanimous decision and the people who disagree clearly don't hold back... It's just potentially gonna put you off a perfectly lovely name (or make you love it more!)

WillDoMama · 26/02/2018 22:06

Thank you Cosmoa, appreciated 👍😉❤️
