We both like Thomas.

But it doesn't really work with our surname... And we seem have really different tastes in girl's names.

I'd be really grateful for suggestions / advice.

If it's a girl, Tamsin (or Tamzin, Tamsyn etc) is Cornish for Thomasina.

However you may find which baby arrives you child doesn't look like a 'chosen name' but something else altogether!

JumpingFrogs · 08/02/2018 18:18

Clara would be fine in German. And I believe Alice is quite popular in German too. I know a Swiss German child called Emmeline. Katarina? Susanna? Louisa? I think all of those would work in German too

SpottyBrolly · 08/02/2018 18:23

Emil is nice. What about Bernard or Leonard? Lots of shortnings with both names if that appeals to you.

MikeUniformMike · 08/02/2018 18:32

Emil is fab. As in Emil and the Detectives.

hystericaluterus · 08/02/2018 19:14

Emil I like, but always makes me think of dämlich, ie stupid in German.

MikeUniformMike · 08/02/2018 19:17

Rudy?

CormoranStrike · 08/02/2018 19:35

I’m guessing the surname is Thomason.

So, dual language names from me are:

Alex
Axel
Peter
Kurt

Johanna
Anna
Sylvie

Swearwolf · 08/02/2018 19:45

We have a frank short for Franklin, would that work? I think it'd sound fine in German.

floriad · 08/02/2018 19:52

I think I like Susanna. Thanks :)

Katarina is nice. But there's the issue of the pronunciation, the spelling etc...

Emil I like, but always makes me think of dämlich, ie stupid in German.

I wouldn't have thought of that one. But I also have weird associations with some names... (Peter, for example...)

Emil reminds me of the detectives and of the Lindgren book :)

spotty
I really like Leonard. Leonard, Emil, Frank and Francesco are names I like (but DH thinks they're too "out there"...)

Franlkin would probably work but I personally honestly prefer Frank.

Johanna and Anna are nice but don't give me this warm feeling of "this could be the name.", tbh.

Alexander
Frederik nn Fred or Rik/Riki
Tobermory nn Toby (I suspect this may not actually be a real name except for Wombles. But it should be)

floriad · 08/02/2018 20:04

Tobermory

I've been to Tobermory, I remember Mull as a nice Island. But I've honestly never heard / seen it as a given name ;)

Alexander and Frederik are nice but they sound harsh to me personally.

OP posts:
nobutreally · 08/02/2018 20:05

No, me neither, although my ds gets it as a nickname (he's a Thomas!) wombles.wikia.com/wiki/Tobermory

Cockmagic · 08/02/2018 20:07

Thomas Thompson?
Please no!

DavidPuddy · 08/02/2018 20:13

I don't see why you couldn't just have Frank?

But, regarding Francis, my experience is that Germans only know it as a male and not a female name.

floriad · 08/02/2018 20:15

cock
Thomas Florian / Claudio / Frank.... Thompson?

no

lucky you. It's such a gorgous name imo!

CyclingFanGirl · 09/02/2018 06:47

Effi?

Or the Scottish spelling Effie

ghostbusters · 09/02/2018 07:45

Hector? I have a Hector and he's the only one I know.

floriad · 09/02/2018 08:41

ghostbusters
I honestly love Hectors.

Seriously. I have to write my OH and ask him about it right now.

David

I agree. Frank could be a standalone.

And OH can easily pronounce it (unlike Francesco. But seeing as he can pronounce Francesca.... I'm taking that argument with a few grains of salt Wink I think he's just trying to be nice about the name of my favourite granduncle...)

So...

Thomas ... "Thomas"
Hector ... "Thomas"
Frank ... "Thomas"

Is Effie short for something?

It sounds cute but we can't use a nickname.

Mjnhb · 09/02/2018 08:44

Greta known as Etta.

ghostbusters · 09/02/2018 08:55

Smile such a fab name. Once we found that, we couldn't see beyond it.

floriad · 09/02/2018 13:19

Etta is lovely but Greta doesn't feel right...

Hector really is lovely. I agree :)

OP posts:
SpottyBrolly · 09/02/2018 13:57

Hector is lovely.

floriad · 09/02/2018 17:49

Spotty

I like it as well :)

I currently like Hector, Thomas, Frank, Emil, Francesco, Helena, Elena, Francesca, Alma, Leona and Selma.

DH says he might be ok with Hector and Frank but we still don't agree on any girl's names...

Anyhow. Thanks :)!
