Hello! Due soon with DC2 - we already have a Bethan and I need some ideas for other Welsh names! I quite like Elin for a girl but boys I have no idea.... would love some inspiration!

OP posts:

Not many people speak Welsh, and the parents would know that the names were dated. If the name is nice they might not care and it might work for them.
Some of the names aren't nice. They are made up names that have had their time and appear a bit downmarket.
Dylan and Carys type names are not David and Catherine type names.
That's like saying that Gary and Tracy are James and Emma type names.
David and Catherine have perfectly fine and popular welsh versions - Dewi/Dafydd and Catrin.

CandyYumYum on the Keeva thread posted this:
(To be honest I'm a bit amused by all the love for Niamh, Aoife, Caoimhe, Ciara etc. To me they're just the names of everyone I ever went to school with. Uninspiring)

Have you thought on Manon for a girl OP. I prefer Elin though.

DullAndOld · 01/02/2018 14:46

oh I love Manon, so pretty. (could have been persuaded by the film, Manon des Sources)

Another poster added about the name Niamh (the Irish version of Nia):
"It's like calling your baby Joanne/Lisa/Claire."

TatianaLarina · 01/02/2018 15:28

They’re not dated in the UK or the US though, so it’s entirely location dependent.

And to be perfectly honest I couldn’t give a stuff if people thought a name was dated anyway.

MikeUniformMike · 01/02/2018 15:33

Nobody could. That's why we all love names like Wayne and Shirley.

gwdihwfach29 · 02/02/2018 20:52

Manon is such a beautiful name.Welsh and French, what's not to like?❤️

TatianaLarina · 02/02/2018 22:28

?? Wayne and Shirley are awful full stop. But very many names that were once dated come back into fashion, sometimes precisely because they are dated.

I'm slightly taken aback by the many posts assuming that no English/other non-Welsh person could possibly manage to pronounce Welsh names and letter sounds/combinations specific to the language properly!
DH and I are not Welsh, but lived in a very Welsh-speaking area for several years. Not only did we not roll our eyes at anyone's name, we learned to speak Welsh. We weren't there for long enough to become fluent (and have probably forgotten most of it!), but we did our best.
Apologies for the rant, but some of you are being rather unfair! I only clicked on this thread to see if our DS's name was suggested...and before anyone asks, yes we do pronounce it correctly!

Retrovibe89 · 02/02/2018 23:07

My husband is Welsh and names Steffan - surprised no one else has mentioned this name!

DullAndOld · 03/02/2018 14:36

ye I do know quite a few Steffs here in wales.

DullAndOld · 03/02/2018 14:38

" yes we do pronounce it correctly! "

well that is because you live there and have made the effort. An awful lot of people don't.
Lost count of the English people who talk about 'Aber myoorig' (Abermeurig) and 'Klan gee'o' (Llangeitho) even when they have lived there for years.

FintyTin · 03/02/2018 17:25

@DullAndOld

I may have been a little tired and ranty last night! The point I was taking issue with was that of no English person being capable of managing the pronunciation, which simply isn't true...
The flip side of that is your point of seemingly very few even bothering to try, which I can agree with! I find this exasperating, too! I can only assume that it's the same mentality which prevents certain Brits from making any attempt to learn Spanish if they move to Spain; but complain vociferously about refugees coming to the UK and not being fluent in English the instant they step off the plane/ferry.
