What's the consensus on the name Ernest/Ernie?

I'm almost 8m preg and all through my pregnancy my partner and I have struggled to find a name we both liked.
In the end we picked 3 names each. I chose one of his (James) and he chose one of my choices (Ernest - after my grandad x)
We then played best of three games of pool to decide the name.
I won 2-0 😂 So Ernie it is, with James as a second name.
But now I'm not even sure I'm 100% on Ernest!
I'm hoping when I look into my baby's gorgeous newborn face that will help decide 😀

Part of the appeal of Ernie for me as a professional childcarer for 18yrs is I've never come across a little Ernest.
What do others think?

I know a 4 year old Ernie and it really suits him. Go for it if you like it!

Love it
Posting for opinions on any name on here is just a mind fuck!
All that matters is what you like x

I love Ernest and agree that the Benny Hill link will be completely irrelevant to his generation!

As for those saying it is massively old fashioned, this little boy will be in a class with Archies, Alfies, Wilfreds, Reggies and Erics so will hardly stand out. On top of that Ernest itself is massively rising in popularity - it has jumped 120 places in three years, going from 440 to 320, not popular by any stretch but certainly not obscure.

To add another potential nickname if you aren't keen on Ernie, I know a little Ernest who is know as Nes.

I really like Ernie/Ernest. My dad always hoped for a son called Ernesto

IVflytrap · 29/01/2018 15:53

I think Ernest is a lovely, solid name, and Ernie is really sweet. If Alfie and Archie can make a comeback, I don't see why Ernie couldn't.

Thanks xx
I actually like Ernesto too, but I'm not sure I can get away with that without a decent Spanish accent 😄
I imagine he will get called Ernesto though when I'm practising my Spanish 😁😁😁

I really like Ernest but Ernie I’m not quite as keen on but im sure if I met one it would grow on me! Love James.

Hello! Out of curiosity, did you call your son Ernest/Ernie!? I hope so! My son (who is 10) is an Ernie, and people love the name. A few people weren’t sure at first, but it’s grown on everyone and really suits our boy. He’s an Ernest on his birth certificate, but everyone calls him Ernie. We’ve only met one other child name Ernie on a day trip away from where we live, but our Ernie is the only one we know in the area and he is most definitely the only one at school. We always get very positive comments from people when they hear his name. We hope you called your little one Ernest! X

Love Ernest but less keen on Ernie.

user1493494961 · 25/07/2019 23:02

Call him James.

Icklepup · 26/07/2019 10:13

Love Ernest, way better than your vetoed names.

Frith2013 · 26/07/2019 13:31

I like Ernest but not Ernie. The fastest milkman in the west, to those of us who are aging.

I’d rather have Edwin.

Frith2013 · 26/07/2019 13:32

Ernesto is a bit Guevera to me, to the pp!

Bezalelle · 26/07/2019 19:46

It's very try-hard IMHO.

diddlediddle · 26/07/2019 22:27

It's great!

Owlbert · 27/07/2019 18:02

Love the name!
