DH & I will be TTC #2 in a few months. DS is called Noah & we want to pick another Hebrew name for #2.

We both like the name Shai for a boy however I don't want to have to always be explaining how it's pronounced. That will annoy me & him!

So how would you pronounce it & do you like it?

I think it would be pronounced like shy and I do quite like it. If it is pronounced shay then less keen.

PringlesPirate · 04/01/2018 19:57

I’d pronounce it “shy”

TabbyCat864 · 04/01/2018 19:59

I would pronounce it 'Shay'. I quite like it.

FizzyGreenWater · 04/01/2018 19:59

I'd say Shy.

It's ok. Not lovely, just ok. Not much to it. Noah is much nicer.

Shalva1970 · 04/01/2018 20:00

Shay

Fekko · 04/01/2018 20:00

Sh-eye?

FizzyGreenWater · 04/01/2018 20:00

And yes if it's Shay I don't like it at all. Not sure why.

MrsHathaway · 04/01/2018 20:00

Shy

I knew one at university (he studied Hebrew as it happens) who would put me off using the name by association. But I don't think it's too "out there".

Noah is very mainstream at the moment. Equivalents would be more like Jacob, Isaac, Reuben - all Torah names!

autumncolour · 04/01/2018 20:01

Without knowing the origin, I would pronounce it 'shy.' I think I would worry DC might get nicknamed shite. Sorry.

AfterSchoolWorry · 04/01/2018 20:01

Shy.

I'm afraid I don't like it much as a name.

Cheekyandfreaky · 04/01/2018 20:01

I would pronounce it ‘Shy’ not keen. If it’s supposed to be prounounced ‘Shay’ I would spell it ‘Ché/ Che’

gingerbreadmam · 04/01/2018 20:01

I like Shay. Shai (shy) makes me think of a really very sad book I read about child abuse which is all I think of when I hear the name.

BathTangle · 04/01/2018 20:02

I'd say Shy. I quite like it and like the idea of a Hebrew name but suspect people will assume it is a "made up" spelling. Depends if that would bother you!

ShatnersBassoon · 04/01/2018 20:03

Like Chay, which is OK. If it is like shy, then I'm not so keen.

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 04/01/2018 20:03

Shy. Which is asking for quips about his confidence level for the rest of his life.

happytobemrsg · 04/01/2018 20:03

autumncolour oh no I hadn't thought of that nn

It is pronounced "Shy" so it looks like the majority of people would pronounce it correctly

happytobemrsg · 04/01/2018 20:06

RunRabbitRunRabbit That's one of my concerns.

MrsHathaway it's annoying how popular Noah it but it was the only boy name we could both agree on!

Sorry but any name that is pronounced "shay" always instantly makes me ask " Where do whores go?" In Tyrion's voice from Game Of Thrones. I have tried and tried to get rid of it but it sticks. I recently mentioned it to a friend and she said she did the exact same thing.

AstridWhite · 04/01/2018 20:09

I have never heard Shai, only a boy called Shay and a girl called Shaye. I like it for a girl, less so for a boy.

I guess Shai would be pronounced like Shy which doesn't really work for me.

Somewherethatsgreen · 04/01/2018 20:09

Shay. I know a female Shay, who is somewhat horrible.

ScreamingValenta · 04/01/2018 20:11

"Shy"; and it's not a name I like. It sounds a bit too try-hard.

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 04/01/2018 20:11

I would say Shy, if it had an e instead of i then I would pronounce it Shay

SandyBeyatch · 04/01/2018 20:12

"Shy" like Thai would be my guess.

AstridWhite · 04/01/2018 20:12

somewhere the Shaye I know is a sweetheart, so I like it because of that. It's funny how associations can sway opinion so much.
