I like it but do you think it sounds too 'grown up' for a baby and toddler?

Carmen is lovely. Carmel is dreadful.

Plus I wouldn't worry about a name being too grown up for a toddler. Better that than a toddler friendly name when she's fifty.

My daughters best friend is called Carmen, lovely girl and lovely name.

Love it!

horatioisabrick · 18/12/2017 23:32

Lovely name.

I have a relative called Carmella, who is always known as Carmelita, ita being a Spanish diminutive for 'little'. I love her name. Carmen is lovely too.

What’s wrong with Carmel?

It’s a title of Mary, Mt Carmel features in the Old Testament and means something along the lines of ‘planted’ in Hebrew.

It’s also the name of an actual mountain range, Haifa is situated on the slopes of Mt. Carmel as well, btw.

It's an Irish thing. Carmel is very dated name there, of a similar vibe to Pauline in the UK. Everyone knows a busybody called Carmel.

And? That's a great list of facts, but facts don't make it a nice sounding name. It's very much a name for women in their 50s/60s in my area.

Enid, Agnes, Maud... I'm sure there's plenty of wonderful facts behind them. Still awful names imo.

horatioisabrick · 19/12/2017 10:53

I actually like Enid Blush

I think it was the way it was phrased (‘Carmel is dreadful’) that kind of threw me for a loop. That’s all.

Carmen is beautiful. It’s my best friend’s name, and I was always jealous.

Have always much preferred it to Carmel.

CaptainChristmas · 22/12/2017 14:13

I find it a bit harsh sounding but don’t really know why. I used to know an absolutely lovely Carmen.

daisypond · 22/12/2017 14:54

I like Carmen - you're naming a person, not a (temporary) baby.

suckonthatmaureen · 22/12/2017 14:58

Absolutely love it. I have an Aunt called Carmen, and she is a force of nature (in a good way!)
