Hi all,

DH and I have a very short name shortlist for our first baby, due in Feb.

We’re having a surprise - boys name has been decided, but we can’t quite agree on a girls name.

DH likes Beatrice but I prefer Mary - I think Beatrice is a little formal, and he thinks Mary a bit plain and old fashioned!

Your thoughts please? No ideas re middle names for either name yet! Confused

Mary sounds fresh again now

Agreed. It was overused in the past and I never liked it but think it's rather sweet now and due a comeback

I prefer Beatrice though would probably use Bea as a nickname which I think is really sweet. Not that keen on Mary.

CakeRattleandRoll · 27/11/2017 12:49

Love Mary. It would have been on our shortlist for DD, but really didn't go with our surname.

TheodoreTheChipmunk · 27/11/2017 14:33

Was just about a comment but have seen others have already said-

Mary is another word for vagina. Don't do it OP.

Do you like Rosemary with the option of shortening to Mary?

bridgetreilly · 27/11/2017 23:09

I like both names a lot, but I think I prefer Beatrice Mary to Mary Beatrice.

Bea is such a cute little nickname, too.

KatieKookaburra26 · 28/11/2017 16:23

My DD is Mary and we get nothing but complements.

dillytilly · 29/11/2017 14:52

Mary is lovely, a timeless classic !!!

Misslemon01 · 01/12/2017 22:16

I love Mary! If DH finds it plain, could consider Marie?

BelfortGabbz · 01/12/2017 23:07

I would rather be called Beatrice than Mary past the age of 10.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/12/2017 23:17

Mary is probably due for a revival. I don't think I have met a single one in RL

My mother, both my grandmas, my aunt and my SIL are all called Mary. I seem to have got them all while you have none.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/12/2017 23:18

So, it wouldn't be my first choice, I'm afraid.

In that context, I prefer Beatrice.

rowtheboats · 02/12/2017 05:44

Definitely no to Mary, very plain and very old lady but not in a cool retro way!

MsJuniper · 02/12/2017 06:06

We won’t decide until baby arrives anyway, so I’ve still got time to convince DH. Although, our boys name was his first choice (name passed down through family), so I think it’s only fair I get to choose the girls name

Is your DH from a very traditional family? Like the type with crowns, horses and castles....?

I know a 5yr old Mary and it is so unusual these days that it sounds lovely. It is due for a revival.

namechange2222 · 02/12/2017 06:59

Adore the name Mary

Bue · 02/12/2017 07:41

Love it. Would have used it if surname wasn't so plain Jane - think Mary Smith. Sounds like a name on every 19th c gravestone up and down the land! So we used it as dd2's middle name instead.

Mummabearof3 · 05/12/2017 19:11

Mary is very sweet.
Or maybe Mariam?

KanyeWesticle · 05/12/2017 19:11

Mary is lovely. If he thinks it is too plain, how about Rosemary?

Whythesnoring · 05/12/2017 20:14

i really Love Mary,
the only thing tht puts me off, is it's a (perhaps regional) slang word for vagina! I remember a girl at school upset because she had 'a sore Mary' (ddnt go down well as we were at a catholic school)!
And i heard it used again recently on One Born Every Minute 'OOooooh my Mary is killing'

Sophronia · 05/12/2017 20:45

Mary does sound fresh again now. I like it!

PinkFlamingo888 · 05/12/2017 21:07

It was my Granny’s name so would love to use Mary one day for a little girl but trying to decide if I like it enough as a name by itself.

Rainbowandraindrops67 · 05/12/2017 21:17

I love the name Mary -was on our shortlist - simple and cute
