Wilfred- wilf or Freddie ??

We have just had our second son and thinking of calling him Wilfred as we love the names will, wilf and Freddie so gives him options when older. Neither my husband or I are mad on Wilfred in full and trying to decide between wilf or Freddie for everyday. Surname will be whitehead. Any thoughts?

Wilf, Freddie is very popular atm

AnyaMoondial · 20/11/2017 10:57

Wilf. It's a fantastic nn.

TatianaLarina · 20/11/2017 10:57

Wilfred is awful, just call him Will/William.

deptfordgirl · 20/11/2017 11:36

I prefer Freddie but, yes, it does seem to be very popular and people might presume he's a Frederick.

deptfordgirl · 20/11/2017 11:36

Then again Wilf Whitehead is pretty cool.

glitterbiscuits · 20/11/2017 11:39

If you don’t like the name Wilfred don’t use it.
Just pick the shortened version to start with.

glitterbiscuits · 20/11/2017 11:39

How about Willem?

IVflytrap · 20/11/2017 12:19

Will or Freddie. I don't like Wilf, it makes me think of a dog barking.

If you're not that keen on the name Wilfred but like the nicknames, how about Alfred or Frederick/Frederic to get the nn Freddie?

WhatKatyDidNotDo · 20/11/2017 12:48

Love Wilf.

Although, he may get called Fred when at school.

stonygreysoil · 20/11/2017 15:09

hi OP, Wilfred + Whitehead sounds like a teammate of Sir Alf Matthews... you may like this of course :)

Freddie is more modern sounding though.

Also good from names above:

Alfred
William
Frederick

or Edward (Eddie)

pipilangstrumpf · 20/11/2017 20:45

You don’t like Wilfred, so why name your son Wilfred Confused?

Personally I prefer Fred or Freddie over Will or Willy, but perhaps find a name you both love?

Nicknames evolve naturally and often have little correlation to the full name.

therealreason · 20/11/2017 20:51

Love Wilf Smile

QueenNovo · 20/11/2017 21:24

Love Freddie, don't like Wilf.

CrossFreelancer · 22/11/2017 09:44

Wilfred is lovely. Very cute but a grown ups name. It will see him through life.
I like both Wild or Freddie and think both are suitable nicknames for Wilfred.

I'm trying to get DH to agree to it myself. But he thinks it will be shortened to Will/Willy by others. We both don't like those.

FergalBurgal · 22/11/2017 09:45

Wilf

ByeByePrivacy · 22/11/2017 09:46

Don't use Wilfred if you don't like it or love it just for the nick names!

Erica891 · 22/11/2017 10:15

I think "Fredie Will" is way better. :)

raviolidreaming · 23/11/2017 20:33

Don't use Wilfred if you don't like it or love it just for the nick names!

Agreed. That's madness

Your son in years to come: I don't like my name.
You: yeah, your dad and I were never that keen on it either.
Confused

Nonameyet1 · 24/11/2017 12:37

Wilf is gorgeous.

daisypond · 24/11/2017 13:12

Don't call him Wilfred if you don't like it - that's madness! Why not call him William Frederick Surname? Then he could be Will, or Wilf (with the F from Frederick), or Freddie, as nicknames/short forms?

pipilangstrumpf · 24/11/2017 18:03

Definitely don't name your son Wilfred if you don't like it. I'm not keen either.

AnyaMoondial · 24/11/2017 18:09

I have a friend called William who goes by wilf as nn. It's fine.
