What other names might we like?

Our baby is due in the next week and we still can’t narrow down the names.

We have a Very common surname, especially for our area, so want a name that’s a little more unusual without being totally out there.

Boys names we like:
Felix (but not sure about the cat food connection)
Jasper (this seems to be increasingly popular where we are, so not sure any more)
Emlyn (but sounds V. Welsh with our surname and we aren’t at all)
Alastair (one my sister wants to potentially use in future as Ali works in both English and Turkish and she needs a name to do that)
Orson (bit of a curveball, loved it initially and now I think we’ve lost our nerve)

Girls names we like:
Margot (but is it too similar to Maggot?)
Penelope (seeing this a lot on here so not sure if it could be the next big thing in names)
Genevieve (dyslexic DH really struggles to spell this)
Helena (exactly the same name, down to the surname, of the woman next door)
Audrey (next door’s dog, and with surname becomes name of long running soap character)

Your help would be very much appreciated.

For a boy:

  • Theo (Roald Dahl's son's name, plus the name of the son of a good friend of mine). My friend didn't shorten Theodore, just named her son Theo. I like it.
  • Arthur (my younger son's name). It is a strong name. We are very happy with it.

Your list:
Felix - I don't like it, I don't know why.
Jasper. Please don't.
Emlyn. This is not too bad. Would you consider Emil? Or Edwin?
Alastair. Discuss with your sister.
Orson. I'm not sure. Would you consider Oren?

Girls names:
Margot - I would pronounce this as Mar-go. Don't sound the 't'. I like it, but it doesn't grab me.
I like Helena but your neighbour might think you are a bit strange.
Penelope - when I was a child I thought this was pronounced Penny-Lope (even though there were various girls named Penny at school).
I love Genevieve.
Audrey - I don't like the sound of it.

Girls names (these are all 'family' names for me):
Fiona
Elizabeth
(and from the NL side):
Mimi
Suzanna
Johanna
Beatrix

Hope that helps

My daughters middle name is Margot and I love Genevieve 😍 For first names we liked Madeleine, Francesca and Rosa as well.

For boys I like Hugh, Arthur, Emmett. Really like Felix and Jasper.

Felix - Nice, but getting to be quite popular.

Jasper - See above. I know less Jaspers than Felixs though.

Emlyn - If I saw Emlyn, I would assume the child was a girl, but I'm not at all familiar with Welsh and am not from the UK.

Alastair - Love this, but would talk it over with your sister instead of forging ahead with it.

Orson - Like this, and don't think it's too out there. Fits with more popular names like Oscar, Austin, and other -son names.

Margot - Not a fan, and very trendy.

Penelope - Like this, but it has increased rapidly in popularity over recent years.

Genevieve - Love this, but would be an automatic veto if your husband struggles with it.

Helena - Not a fan.

Audrey - Not a fan.

hungryradish · 10/11/2017 21:55

I love Felix too but just can't use it due to the cat thing. Honestly the cat pops into my mind every time I hear it - such a shame they've ruined that name!

Like us, you might like Phoenix instead?

Bouncingbelle · 10/11/2017 22:08

Oh i love the name Margot - just so soft and pretty yet strong. Genevieve is fab too, the kind of name i would like to be called!

What about:
Honor
Gabrielle
Caroline
Susannah

Elliott
Keir
Niall
Vincent
Zachary

WyfOfBathe · 10/11/2017 22:12

I like most of those names, especially Margot, Audrey & Orson. Margot & Audrey were both on our shortlist for DD.

I wouldn't use Emlyn myself, as it looks like a girls' name to me (Emily, Emmeline). Others might disagree with me - especially if you're in an area where it's a more common name.

Other suggestions:
Alina / Lina
Georgiana
Hazel
Ophelia
Anais
Aubrey
Vivienne

Ellis
Carson
Sinclair
Fraser
Finn
Simeon
Casper
Darius

flimflaminurjams · 10/11/2017 22:15

Freya is a nice suggestion.

Emmett is the name of the Doc in Back to the Future lol

What about Bob, Stuart, Kevin or Jerry?
