Sofia/Sophia how to pronounce?!

I had a lovely great grandmother from Eastern Europe who was called Sophia pronounced So-fia-ya rather than So-fee-ya.

I love the spelling Sophia and the name but I'm not sure how it would normally be pronounced. How do you pronounce it? Is there a third way?

I would automatically say Sopheeeya.

Which is utterly weird because the only person I have ever known who had this name was called Soph-eye-a. Confused

I would say So-fee-ya

Oh interesting thank you.

So-fia-ya?! With 4 syllables?
I have never heard it pronounced like that before.

I would say Sew fee a.

I would say Soh fee ya (with the accent on the middle syllable), but my sister who has visited Sofia in Bulgaria says that they pronounce it Soff ee ya with the accent on the first syllable, so you could use that.

But I think most people seeing it written would say Soh fee ya.

Either soph-eye-ah or soph-eee-ah. Stress on the middle syllable.

DH prounounces it more Zoff-ya. I say SoffEEuh. It would have been ds3's name if he'd been a dd. Beautiful name.

When I was a child (now 42) I only ever heard this pronounced So-f-eye-a, but every young Sophia/Sofia I meet nowadays is So-fee-a.

I'm not sure either is wrong or right TBH.

My daughter is Sophia - pronounced Sopheeeaa - but all her friends call her Soph and despite myself and her dad saying we wouldn't we call her Soph as well (unless she's naughty of course!!). The same applies with the name Mia - I know some children who pronounce it Meeeeaaa and some who pronounce it Myyyaa.

celticmissey · 31/10/2017 09:41

Sorry... missed the bit out where we do call her Soph.

Wifeandstepmum · 31/10/2017 09:42

I've just realised (doh) that I also have a cousin with a variation on this name Sar-fee-a she's Algerian.
So many variations

I'd usually pronounce it So-fee-ya, but Soph-eye-ya makes sense too.

DiegoMadonna · 31/10/2017 10:53

In England the usual pronunciation is So-FEE-uh
