Margot

Have a girl due in January. We both LOVE Margot however only how it sounds, not how it’s written, wouldn’t want to go with Margo or Margaux either. Unfortunately it just looks to harsh with our surname and every time I see it written down I think of maggot!

Can you lovely people think of any similar names?? We like more traditional old fashioned names

Thanks in advance!

Margot is lovely; Margaret or Marjorie are awful!
Marina?

Margot is lovely. Don't mess with the spelling, it's perfect the way it is. Very sophisticated name - and I've just realised that Sophie has jumped out of that while I typed. Which is another lovely name.

All the Margots I know pronounce it Mar-gott. If you prefer the Margo pronunciation I’d spell it like that.

pipilangstrumpf · 30/10/2017 22:38

I also like Margherita a lot!

I’ve never heard the T pronounced in Margot. (I’ve known three)

pipilangstrumpf · 30/10/2017 22:49

In Germany, Scandinavia etc Margot is pronounced phonetically so Mar-got.

Margot is lovely. if someone wants to take the piss out of her they will find something it doesn’t matter what her name is!

I feel the same way about Margot that you do. It’s just the look of it written down that puts me off! I find Margaret really dated but Martha is lovely. Love Mabel too. Magdalena, Magnolia, Marigold could be poss options with nn Maggie.

I love Margot and we have a two year old Margot, spelt with the t which is my preferred spelling. Margo looks a bit trendy and nicknamey to me. Also love Margaret. There's loads of good suggestions on this thread, a lot of which we had on our short list too - but obvs I think you should go with Margot! By far the coolestGrin.

Margot is beautiful. Hate it when I see it spelt Margo.
Nancy is pretty, old fashioned and not too popular.

My DD (6) has a friend called Margarita who goes by Margot. I think it's lovely!

TheLegendOfBeans · 01/11/2017 22:20

I’m a big big fan of Margot.

Don’t overthink the “maggot” thing; I’ve never thought of that until you mentioned.

Martha is becoming too popular (SE England) and Margaret is such an aged name.

Margot is classy and still quite rare x

Maggie is lovely.
