Names for 9 year old girls

Hi everyone,

I'm working on my NanoWriMo project right now (if you haven't heard of it - you write a novel in November) and stuck on some character names!

I need a generic and common (as in not unusual) name for one 9 year old, and another very flouncy and unusual one (poncey, probably). With the second one I'm looking for multiple names to combine, so think a first name and one or two middles.

Would love to hear suggestions - I teach as well, so I'm really trying to avoid any names of kids I know, I don't want to model it off them. I've tried out a few names but for various reasons they werent quite 'right' iyswim.

All suggestions welcome!

The ten most common girls' names for babies born in the UK in 2008 - which is right for a nine-year-old - were: Olivia, Ruby, Emily, Grace, Jessica, Chloe, Sophie, Lily, Amelia, Evie. So I'd pick one of those for the more generic name.

Lily, Ellie, Ella, Megan, Ruby, Isabella, Olivia, Sophie, Chloe, Katie, Hannah, Grace, Milly - all quite popular amongst 9 year olds or thereabouts of my acquaintance.

For flouncy how about Gabriella, Delilah, Marianne, Genevieve, Persephone, Angelica, Antoinette, Aurelia, Camilla, Bianca, Celeste, Florence, Odette, Collette, Romilly, Tabitha, Claudia, Verity, Vivienne, Helena, Marissa, Cressida, Jemima, Cosima, Arabella, Anoushka, Lucinda, Venetia, Perdita, Odillie.

I’d combine a couple of those:

Lily Ruby Georgia for the 9yo

Posy Clementina for the posh one

Or Ottillie Xanthe Rose

RavenWings · 29/10/2017 15:43

Thanks all! I think I've narrowed down the first girls name (I think Sophie or Ella), but nothing jumping out for the second child - she might just be Clarissa until I get a better feel for the character Grin Clarissa isn't the right name, but something close to the vibe I want.

See I think Sophie suits both posh and children from those working class families.

RavenWings · 29/10/2017 16:22

Well, I wouldn't say I'm looking for a posh vs...er, unposh... name, just common vs very unusual and flowery. Second girls name is one for those with notions, as we say in Ireland!

Sophie, Ella etc are ordinary names nowadays, there's lots of them, so they fit the criteria Smile And there is something about those two that match the character best!
