Isabel or Isabelle or neither?

I like Isabel, but worry that it is seen as dull and overly popular.

DH likes Isabelle (I don't). He hates pretty much every name except Isabelle and Ava.

We have a Heidi already.

Any alternatives/opinions? Due in January and would like to make a decision!

I prefer Isobel too

PandorasXbox · 24/10/2017 19:00

I prefer Isabelle. You can shorten it to Belle if you like.

Chocachoo · 24/10/2017 19:53

Love Isobel (and that spelling) Of your other names I really like Amy. It was probably very popular 20 years ago but I never see any baby Amys now!

Threeandabit · 24/10/2017 20:13

Amy is lovely.

BakedBeeeen · 24/10/2017 20:56

Another vote for Greta!

SuperBeagle · 24/10/2017 21:11

I would spell it Isabel, but Isobel is the most common spelling among people I know.

Of yours list, I like Greta, Ivy and Amy.

stellarfox · 24/10/2017 21:28

I like Ada, Ivy and Isabel/Isobel. What about Iris, Isla, Emmeline, Amelia/Emilia, Cora?

purplecollar · 24/10/2017 21:33

There are a lot of them in dd's year of various spellings.

What about

Arabella or
Araminta (we encountered a "Minty" recently)

cremedecacao · 24/10/2017 23:43

I'm not keen on Arabella... 'belle' ending names I'm fine with but not 'bella'. Think I prefer a 'strong' sounding ending. I am swaying towards Ada and Amy now... I don't know any baby Amys either! I think it has really dropped in popularity recently. Amelia is too popular at the moment and not sure it goes with my surname.

Big fan of Iris but can't use!

Ok. So based on my own likes/dislikes and from this thread, my new list is:

Ada
Astrid
Ingrid
Greta
Enid
Isabel NOT Isabelle
Isobel
Amy
Ivy

I'm hoping I can sway DH to one of these names!

I like Ada and Isobel best from new list.

FizzyGreenWater · 25/10/2017 10:03

I think Amy is a teeny bit boring but perfectly nice.

Greta Isobel
Astrid Isobel

would be my choices and they go very well with Heidi.

Also

Ingrid Ada
Amy Greta
Astrid Greta

would work. No to two 'a' endings: Greta Ada doesn't go so well.

BernardBlacksHangover · 25/10/2017 10:04

Amy Greta as suggested above is lovely too,

lalaloopyhead · 25/10/2017 10:04

I went with Isabelle (knew someone French with that spelling) though at the time it was not a popular name at all and everyone spelt it wrong for years - going with mostly Isobel/Isabel. I think with the popularity of Isabella the longer spelling has become (as has the name in general) got more common.

I think now I would probably go with the Isobel spelling now, and think it is still a lovely name.

Onceuponatartanshoelace · 25/10/2017 10:12

I have an Isobel (DD2) - love the name really not a fan of Isabelle/Isabella

On choosing her name we had taken in to consideration that DD1's name ends in the same sound as Heidi so we wanted to steer away from that. I have a niece who's name is Ingrid and it often gets complimented..

From your list I'd say Isobel, Greta or Ingrid.. good luck!

ShowOfHands · 25/10/2017 10:16

Heidi is such a beautiful and less common name. Seems almost a shame to go with the ten a penny Isobel.

You mentioned Juniper which is lovely but Aphra too which I bloody love. Astrid is great too. Or Enid. Or Greta

Isobel is marred by it's popularity. It's a shame but often the reaction to it is "oh another one" and not "oh how lovely".

DeadButDelicious · 25/10/2017 10:23

I'm going to vote for Enid! Heidi and Enid just sounds adorable.

KERALA1 · 25/10/2017 18:13

Think the previous poster nailed it with Lisette - pretty and unusual. Isabel is overused however you spell it.

Mrsknackered · 25/10/2017 18:44

Ada and Greta are fab.

Not a fan of Isabel but would spell it Isobel. I do however, really like Ishbel.

holidayqueriwifi · 25/10/2017 19:12

Heidi and Cara

Heidi and Cassia

Heidi and Cleo

Mamabear4180 · 25/10/2017 19:39

When I was young I had 2 dolls called Heidi and Coralie.

I think Eve or Freya would be perfect with Heidi. Heidi seems like a hippy name to me so something whimsical, maybe even Coral or Violet.

I'm not a fan of Isobel or any of your names on your list (so maybe you won't like mine either lol)

Kirsteebell · 21/04/2021 11:20

All those above saying how popular the name is.. I’m 30 years old and have worked in schools my whole working life. I have only ever come across 1 Isabelle.
I’ve recently had my first baby, and guess what we called her.. Isabelle ♥️ Her dad and I love the name. And I’ve yet to come across another Isabelle/Isabel/Isobel. Currently, my school is full of Lacey/Lacey-Leigh’s. Who cares if a name is popular. If you like it, call your child it 🥰

Saltyslug · 21/04/2021 17:27

Ava goes well with Heidi

Isobel I quite like.
