Maryjane or Maryjoan

Carouselfish · 16/10/2017 21:08

We nearly went with Maryjane for DD1. Now we're about to ttc and wondering whether to revive it if we have another girl. However, using the joan ending would mean she was named after both of our grandmothers, one whom is no longer alive.
(am aware of the drug link. am ignoring it in favour of the AA Milne poem link)
DD1 is Carmen.

Isn't Mary Jane a euphemism for marijuana? For me that'd put me off. Maryjoan is nice, unusual but not too 'out there'

PandorasXbox · 16/10/2017 23:54

Joan is awful. Same bracket as Enid, Doris and Edith.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 17/10/2017 08:18

MaryJane or how about MaryJo ?

OyyVeyy · 17/10/2017 08:35

Joanie is cute! Like mad men Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/10/2017 08:38

I know a teen Joni ,she's super trendy and cool ( or however you describe teens these daysConfusedGrin)

RosyPony · 17/10/2017 08:42

Love Joni!

usainboltsleotard · 17/10/2017 08:44

MaryJane is definitely cannabis - please don't do that to your daughter!

PandorasXbox · 17/10/2017 08:49

I’ve never heard of MaryJane to be associated with cannabis.

Is this a new or old thing?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/10/2017 08:51

Neither have I,I associate it with shoes.

Whippetmamma · 17/10/2017 08:55

I have a name very similar to both of these, at high school some people would occasionally make a joke about the association with marijuana but as an adult everyone just comments on what a lovely name it is and how they haven't heard it before.
Mine was also both grannies names together without a hyphen.

PandorasXbox · 17/10/2017 09:03

Yes same here Dame!

manicinsomniac · 17/10/2017 10:54

MaryJoan likes a moan... and other words that rhyme.
I prefer MaryJane

You could say that about many names - how about, 'Mary Jane is a pain'

I prefer Mary Jane though. I do know of the drug slang but I would think of the pretty shoes first.

Longdistance · 17/10/2017 11:02

I remember watching prisoner cell block H, and they called it MaryJoanna. Sorry.

namchan101 · 17/10/2017 11:10

Like the OP mentioned in her first post you mean?

Right? The OP isn't exactly long either. Jeez.

PandorasXbox it's in current popular use and has been since at least the 80s (there was even an R&B group called The Mary Janes Girls, who were active from '79–'87)

villainousbroodmare · 17/10/2017 12:42

It's pleasant but awfully plain. I think Carmen is quite dramatic and glamorous and while siblings' names needn't "match", I would feel a bit slighted at being the sister with the drab name.

Carouselfish · 17/10/2017 13:22

Villain that's what my DM said. I thought it was plain enough it came all the way around to be interesting iyswim.
I'd forgotten about the shoes! Love them!
DP points out Mary Jane is Spiderman's girlfriend. Sigh.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/10/2017 13:23

Joan it is then!

Carouselfish · 17/10/2017 13:28

MaryJane in spanish is MariJuana hence the drug.

Threeandabit · 20/10/2017 22:25

I prefer MaryJane

daisypond · 21/10/2017 12:08

Mary Jean? Or could you go continental with it and use Jeanne Marie, which has a nice rhythm to it?

Joinourclub · 21/10/2017 23:08

Joanna is a nice tribute to a Joan

Joinourclub · 21/10/2017 23:10

I agree that Mary is so plain next to Carmen. What about Marianna or Marina?
