How popular is Sofia / Sophia?

tiddleywinks27 · 09/10/2017 14:42

Do you find it has gotten really, really popular in recent years? I don't actually know of any little girls called Sofia / Sophia myself but read online that it's gotten really popular and is now overused.

What do you all think?

I'm starting to like it and hubby loves it but I'm keen to avoid names which are considered too common.

Thanks!

According to this article form The Independent newspaper, it's the most popular girl's name in the world:
www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/baby-girl-name-sophia-is-rated-the-most-popular-across-world-says-us-expert-a6723706.html

Am sorry if this is disappointing for you. It's still a nice name!

MyfatheristheKing · 09/10/2017 14:53

I know quite a few

NannyR · 09/10/2017 14:54

Extremely popular where I live. I much prefer Sophie.

Very popular and very very boring imo.
Don't mean to cause offence but I dont get the popularity.

ChocolateCrunch · 09/10/2017 15:52

Yep, loads round here too

EmmyInTheSticks · 09/10/2017 16:29

It's a lovely name, I wanted to call DD it. But it is so popular! Across the board with every social group and nationality I know basically.

I went for something more unusual in the end.

MrsLJ2014 · 09/10/2017 21:32

I have a Sofia and Sophia in my year one class, there's one in the other year one class (as well as a Sophie), there was a Sophia in my class last year...so very popular but also a nice name!

areyoubeingserviced · 09/10/2017 21:34

Lovely name, but far too popular.

Trottersindependenttraders · 09/10/2017 21:36

I have a 9 year old Sophia and know of 2 more. One is now 16, the other is also 9. I don’t know any pre-schooler Sophias. For us, it was a name we’d always loved and it was relatively uncommon back in 2008 so I feel we were ahead of the trend Grin Seriously, if you like it, use it. I don’t get the angst about names being too popular.

KadabrasSpoon · 09/10/2017 21:36

Becoming quite popular here (SE) but it is really pretty.
I'm wondering if the popularity is due to the Disney show?

MikeUniformMike · 09/10/2017 21:38

Very popular. Very pretty and a lovely meaning. Also has several pronunciations. I prefer Sophie.

BowlingShoes · 09/10/2017 21:40

I have one! (Age 4). It's quite popular but she is the only one in her reception class and there is only one other in the school. I have come across more Sophies. I love it and don't have a problem with popular names. There are two girls in the class who share an uncommon name so there are never any guarantees.

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 09/10/2017 21:58

I have one of the 3 versions mentioned & am in my late 40s so my parents were very ahead of this trend!

In fact it was very unusual back then - and I often got comments about how I was the first the person had met.

Times have changed 😃

tiddleywinks27 · 09/10/2017 22:44

Thanks all!

As suspected it’s very popular. I’ve decided that doesn’t matter though. Would much rather go with a name that we love than try be ‘different’

A friend of my husbands (who kind of became my mate as well) called her daughter Sofia in February 2016. She's the only one we know.

DramaAlpaca · 09/10/2017 22:52

If you really love it I wouldn't let its popularity bother you.

I went with a very popular name for DS2 because I loved it, and have never regretted it. And funnily enough, he's never had another in his class despite it being a top ten name at the time.

HalloweenStar · 09/10/2017 22:56

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, sounds pretty but to me it's a place name

Liadain · 09/10/2017 23:12

Extremely popular in my school and surrounding schools. Doesn't really matter though if you love it, but if popularity is a worry it's not the one for you.

rachrach2 · 09/10/2017 23:12

I only know of one under 5 called Sophia and she’s in aus. I know of a couple of Sophies which is a beautiful name.

SarahBeeney · 10/10/2017 00:18

Hundreds of both versions where I am (SE London)

thegreylady · 11/10/2017 10:41

We have a 6 year old Sophia in the family. I think it is very pretty.
