I know that this is exactly the kind of thing MN is for, but a few times my name has popped up and I've become quite upset with some of the comments saying it's 'dull' or something like that. Of course list preferences or whatever, but isn't it quite hurtful to people reading with those names? I can't imagine what it would be like to have a name that others are branding as ghastly or whatever?
I have no alternative option and am aware I'm being very unreasonable but it's been on my mind for a while Grin

If we all liked the same things the world would be a dull place!

Nobody would ever like every name, that’s just how it is.

ChippyMinton · 23/09/2017 14:34

Names go in fashions though, so it's likely that your name was popular at the time, no?

DiegoMadonna · 23/09/2017 14:34

I think you probably need to grow a thicker skin.

There is not a single name that won't be disliked by somebody. So seeing somebody say my name or my son's name is dull or ghastly wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Not to mention, it's just a name. They're not calling me dull or ghastly!

ClashCityRocker · 23/09/2017 14:43

I can't imagine being remotely fussed about what a randomer on the Internet thinks about my name.

It's not a reflection on you, just personal preference over something you presumably had no control over.

My name doesn't tend to get mentioned and it probably is a bit dull.

The person who thought your name was dull may have had unusual taste in names.

Fluffysparks · 23/09/2017 14:46

Ok, see I'm BU now Grin Time to grow a thicker skin!

I'm due in 2 weeks and I've seen our girls name come up in several threads where people say it's become a chavvy name and a historic thread for our much rarer boys name where it was absolutely slated OP! 🙈 I've just accepted as others have said here, no name is ever going to be loved by everyone, and as long as you love the name that's all that matters 😊 x

rizlett · 23/09/2017 14:56

...or... time to change your name?? Wink

Branleuse · 23/09/2017 15:00

I find it hurtful when i see names of people i love ripped apart

daisypond · 23/09/2017 15:01

My name is often mentioned on here with shudders... TBH, I don't like it myself, so I see where people are coming from, but hey ho.

ifcatscouldtalk · 23/09/2017 15:02

op there are names that come up on MN from time to time that I don't even know how to pronounce, as I've never seen them before! Then everyone comes along saying how much they love it.
I've seen my own daughter's name described as ,"dull," maybe you and her share a name? Smile.

AuntieStella · 23/09/2017 15:18

I think the value and whole point of the topic is to give people a chance to say what they really think about names, in a way you'd never dream of doing in RL about an actual person. It'd then for the person weighing up which name to decide if any of those opinions actually matter.

Dustbunny1900 · 23/09/2017 15:19

My sons name was described as "common" ..not sure whether that means generic or they meant it like "commoner/peasant" 😂 Just laugh it off

RoryItsSnowing · 23/09/2017 15:27

My names been in the top 20 forever and I'm the first to admit that makes it so dull!!

Aderyn17 · 23/09/2017 15:28

I like the names I chose for my dc, so no one else's opinion is of any consequence. A lot of names that get MN approval are really ugly imo, so I think mn consensus can be dubious when it comes to good taste.
Mind you, I like twigs and pebbly shit too Wink
My name is boring. It's a fact - I couldn't really hold it against posters for saying so.

UrsulaPandress · 23/09/2017 15:29

My name was once described as a middle aged dinner lady with a tight perm.

opheliacat · 23/09/2017 15:30

YABU

I find names really interesting, and discussions about them are when you 'really' see MN. (The other times are on threads about nearly adult children and toddlers saying hilarious Hmm things.)

lynmilne65 · 23/09/2017 15:52

Well, if you don't ask the question you won't know the answer !

SumAndSubstance · 23/09/2017 16:18

Nobody would like DS1's name! DS2's generally fares a bit better, but is certainly not universally liked. Nobody is going to like every single name there is, plus a name in isolation is very different to a name belonging to a person. Generally, if you like a person, their name grows on you, I find.

Liadain · 23/09/2017 16:20

The baby names forum is there to provide advice on names...some people hate some names and will be bluntly honest about it.

I've seen my name on here and people aren't always positive about it. It doesn't really matter - at the end of the day, it's the name they're commenting on, not me.

TatianaLarina · 23/09/2017 16:21

It's never occurred to me to take offence at what anyone says about my name or anyone I know.

I agree with positive comments about names I like, while negative comments - I just think are wrong.

Uumellmahaye · 23/09/2017 16:28

Try a different perspective- my name is 'common' and '70'sEssex chavvy' according to most people. However, it was chosen for me by my lovely Mum who is sadly no longer here. So whatever others feel, my name was chosen, given and used with love and I am happy with that

ShizzleYoDrizzle · 23/09/2017 16:44
Grin

I've just done a search on my name. One person says everyone with my name is lumpen and bad-tempered. The next says it's classic. The next says it's dated.

Who cares!

ShizzleYoDrizzle · 23/09/2017 16:45

I think it's more likely I'd be offended by someone being mean about my kids' names as that would be a judgement on my (impeccable) taste!

SuzukiLi · 23/09/2017 16:48

I have probably the most hated name on mumsnet. But have never encountered any negativity in real life.

ReinettePompadour · 23/09/2017 16:52

I hate my name I really do. I really can't understand why anyone would like it but it frequently appears on mn with very complimentary comments about it. Hmm

It does make me wonder whether theres something odd about me when I read about my shitty name.
