For some reason, I couldn't copy/paste the Swiss ones, so I screen-grabbed them instead. The lists are for German Switzerland, French Switzerland and Italian Switzerland respectively.

That's interesting OP.

I tend to comment on the baby names threads and the "what can I call my baby which works well in Europe" ones and all they need to do really is look at the lists of 3 or 4 countries.Grin, no need to comment at all.

MammieBear · 23/09/2017 11:03

A good, although I'd prefer Benjamin to just Ben

Smoliver · 23/09/2017 11:16

I really like Scandi names at the moment.

A great girls name I always see on the list in Sweden and Norway is Tuva, which means beautiful.

LinoleumBlownapart · 23/09/2017 11:37

lists from other countries are easy to access. We live in Brazil. My children have friends called

Bernardo Heitor, Otavio, Matheus, Vinicius, Arthur, Thiago and Olavo which in the UK would be Bernard, Hector, Octavio or Octavius, Matthew, Vincent, Arthur, James and Olav. I don't think those are widely used in the UK.

The most common name at the moment seems to be Lucas though.

The girls are variations of Maria which is still the most popular name. Maria Clara, Maria Antonia, Maria Julia, Maria Cecilia and Maria Luiza.

mudskip · 23/09/2017 13:03

Anyone know an official list of Japan's? I'm just interested...

Tealdeal747 · 23/09/2017 13:38

I prefer the German list to theEnhlish one.

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 23/09/2017 13:45

Our dd's name appears near the top of these lists and also near the top of lots of other countries (France and Poland). It's not very popular in the uk though. That's one of the reasons we like it so much. It travels well, but is not overused in the uk.

daisypond · 23/09/2017 16:10

Interesting to see that Paul is very high on both those lists, and that's been out of fashion for years in the UK.

Fantspants · 23/09/2017 19:59

Not sure how well this will show up but this is the Swedish one.

My OH is Swedish so we've been trying to find a name that fits both cultures. Including spelling and pronunciation, the Swedish pronunciation of Charlotte sounds more like harlot, which is not what I'm aiming for!!

The biggest difference I notice is Elvira, really high on their list and really low on the UK one!

That didn't work at all.. I'll type it

Tameagobairanois · 23/09/2017 20:07

Elvira! wow. That's an interesting name to be popular in Sweden. It's very clunky sounding. Came across it in a play I did for the leaving cert, El Tragaluz. There was an Elvira. I remember saying to my Spanish friend that I liked it and he laughed like a drain.

My daughter's name features on both lists but doesn't break the top 100 in the UK. I was aware the name travelled well when choosing it though.

Coupled with her surname people could easily assume she is German rather than British, when she's older.

Dixiestampsagain · 24/09/2017 01:23

Mine too- I wonder if they have the same name? She's very happy that all over Europe it's fairly easy to buy things with her name on (except here- where it's not in the top 100!).

howthelightgetsin · 24/09/2017 07:37

I love that the German list groups together different spelling of the same name. Half our top 20 seem to be versions of the same name.
Very similar trends.
