If your name is Cecilia

What do people shorten it to?
My DD's name is Cecilia and we call her Cece but my DP is saying that she needs a more 'grown up' name, he suggests Leah but I'm really not a fan of Leah and I think Cecilia is beautiful as is Celia. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Why can't the "more grown up name" just be Cecilia?! Cece is lovely whatever age.

My friend Celia is called Ce (pronounced See)

Yourshakraishangingout · 18/09/2017 10:11

I'm confused? He wants to change her name? If her name is Cecilia why do you need an alternative name?

Peppapiggs · 18/09/2017 10:14

I don't understand either. Why did you both name her Cecilia?

onemorechangeofname · 18/09/2017 10:17

Just a shorter name to use as Cecilia can be a bit of a mouthful!

I agree i think Cecilia and Cece are fine, it's just my partner

Cecilia is lovely and Cece is really nice. I wanted to call my DD Cecilia.

I think your DH is wrong she has a short name and a grown up name already. Her friends when she is at school will call her many variations of her name because that's what DC do. How old is DD? She probably only needs a more grown up name that Cece when she is 20 and applying for jobs or Uni. Then when she has said job all her co-workers or Uni friends, can call her Cece Grin.

NC4now · 18/09/2017 10:21

I can imagine people calling me Cece at 40. I don't see the problem.

blackteaplease · 18/09/2017 10:22

My nana and two aunts are cecelia. Nana is known as cece, one aunt as ceil/celie and the other in full. These are actual grown ups.

What is your dps problem with the name?

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 18/09/2017 10:22

Celia or Ce(Ce) both seem fine to me.

However, you are U to get Simon & Garfunkel stuck in my head at this hour of the morning. Grin

Yourshakraishangingout · 18/09/2017 10:22

Oh I understand now! Call her CeCe and if she wants a 'grown up' name call her her full name...Leah seems like a totally different name to me.

MammieBear · 18/09/2017 10:36

You could use Celia?

onemorechangeofname · 18/09/2017 10:45

@TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries that song is all we hear 😂
I don't think DP was ever 100% sold on the name and then after she was born his friends said her full name was the poshest name she'd ever heard. I'm quite well spoken, though not from a 'rich' background and people often comment this to him. I think because of that comment he's a bit conscious of her name seeming pretentious. I honestly couldn't care less, I think it's beautiful !!

My DD is Cecilia. Cee by her friends at school. Cecie or Cecilia by other people. I obvs adore the name!

She is 9. It translates superbly throughout Europe (we are a 'multi european' family and currently don't live in the UK) and is grownup I think.

danTDM · 18/09/2017 10:53

Patron Saint of music.

YY, it is perceived as being a bit posh in England, but not countries where they have saints' days. Not at all. But happily it is quite unusual!

holdthewine · 18/09/2017 11:03

My friend Cecilia is known as Sessie.

danTDM · 18/09/2017 11:07

YY Cecie, pronounced Sessie Grin

Enb76 · 18/09/2017 11:07

My daughter has a slightly different version of the name and is called Cessy by her friends.

Mrsknackered · 18/09/2017 11:57

My good friend is Cissy, short for Cecilia and sometimes Cece. She's a grown woman who is big on politics and feminism.

holdthewine · 18/09/2017 12:11

My friend spells it Sessie as well ... she's always been called that.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 18/09/2017 13:01

Assuming you're pronouncing it "See-See", the same abbreviated NN hasn't done disco/r&b singer CeCe (Cecilia) Peniston any harm in life!
(She's now in her late 40s).

Cecilia is a gorgeous name in every way, and Cece's cute.
Your DPIBU :-)

MyBrilliantDisguise · 18/09/2017 13:02

The nickname is usually Celia - why can't you use that?

Sophronia · 18/09/2017 13:59

Celia or Lia

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/09/2017 18:24

CeCe is fine, not Leah, it would have to be Lia.

Mclaren37 · 18/09/2017 18:41

Love love love Cecelia. Cece works as an adult nickname to me, but I also love Celia and Celie (although the latter does remind me of The Colour Purple, slightly depressing, but still usable I think). Don't love Leah/Lia as much, it has a different feel to it as a name. But she can always use that in later life herself if she prefers it. SUCH a good name!

Linnet · 18/09/2017 18:50

I know a Cecelia and her name is shortened to celee (see lee)
