What do you think of the name Struan for a boy? I believe it's a Scottish name that means stream. We aren't Scottish - would it be weird to use it?

The country connection..

I've an Evan. Never set foot in Wales; and I know one (lovely) Welshman

Does it really matter? I've never heard anyone comment negatively

Or is it because Struan should be said with a Scottish accent? Grin

I am also trying to do my best Scottish accent to pronounce Struan (thick Belfast accent here)

I find once you've named the child, people generally just accept whatever he/she is called

Good luck OP

Oh, don't be put off OP. We need a bit of pionerring child naming in the world!
I'm 'very Scottish' but my name has it's origins in Hebrew and would only have been used in Scotland after the Reformation. No one would find it an odd name for a Scot now.

*pioneering

I'm intrigued, TheScottishPlay! Can you share your name? Or is it too unusual?

Love it. One of my favourite names :)

Sophronia · 07/09/2017 17:17

I really like it. I do think people will assume you have a Scottish connection though.

Love the name but I agree with pps that I think it would be weird if you have no Scottish connection.

Froginthehole · 12/09/2017 18:58

I think the pronunciation is Strew-un? I agree it sounds better in a Scottish accent (what doesn't?!) but I think it works in English too. I'll give it some more thought as I do like it

Or what about Stuart?

Struan is lovely - and much prefer struan to stuart.

Please don't let the lack of a Scottish connection put you off - never heard anything so ridiculous as PP saying avoid using the name without any Scottish connections - in today's society I think anything goes and people put waaaay too much thought into these tiny nuances when name choosing imho.

I have a very Irish name - no Irish connections (we are very English) and no-one asks if I do - perhaps my parents were asked at the time of my birth why they chose that name and I'm sure my mother just said because she liked it! End of!

I think Struan is a fab name, but definitely sounds odd in some accents (Scottish here)
