So baby is imminent (38+6 today) and we still haven't pinned down names, but at least the list has reduced massively.

Criteria: baby is half Dutch/half English, we live in NL but obviously I want the name to work both places and preferably elsewhere too. Surname is 'van...', sibling is Vera.

Girl: Livia, Lydia, Lana, Sylvia
Boy: Vincent, Francis(cus), Bernard, Rollo

Girls names are fine

Boys name are really old fashioned especially Bernard (Rollo / Rolo is a chocolate sweet)
Vincent (Vimney is picking up in popularity here)

n0ne · 23/08/2017 09:14

Bernard was my late dad's name.

I know what a Rolo is Hmm. The name is Rollo, like the Viking (or King Rollo, the 70s cartoon).

Vincent and Francis are lovely.

I like Lana best of the girls names (though I think they're all nice.)

Chaffinch4 · 23/08/2017 09:26

Also, Vera is gorgeous! Sadly vetoed by my DH.

n0ne · 23/08/2017 09:30

I know! Vera is so perfect (the name and the child Grin) that we're REALLY struggling to come up with anything half as good for DC2.

I feel like Lana has a similar vintage vibe, but I'm just not quite sold.

My favourites are Lydia and Francis.

SuperBeagle · 23/08/2017 09:51

Vera and Livia are lovely. Prefer Liv to Livia though.

Greta? It has a similar vibe to Vera.

I like Vincent for a boy, but I think Vincent van... and Vera van... is a bit matchy. So the one I like "next best" is Bernard.

SuperBeagle · 23/08/2017 09:52

Oh, love Lana too. Smile

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/08/2017 09:52

Vera and Francis Bernard
Vera and Lydia

n0ne · 23/08/2017 10:18

I love Greta but in Dutch, g is pronounced like the -ch of 'loch', so then it's pronounced differently in the 2 languages which I'm not keen on.

Mammadragon · 23/08/2017 12:01

I do like Lana but someone pointed out to me what it spells backwards and it put me off...might be something to consider.

Vera and Sylvia sound lovely together.
I also like Vera and Francis.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/08/2017 12:17

Vera and Frances (Fran) is lovely too.

MammieBear · 23/08/2017 13:03

Stick with the name's you have on your list try not to be swayed by someone else's personal opinion, they are lovely namesSmile. From your girls I think they are all sweet Sylvia/Sylvie is very on trend, Livia is a good choice may get misunderstood for Olivia though, Lana is Lovely and wouldn't have any pronunciation or spelling issues, Lydia is a sweet biblical name gaining in popularity. For you boys I think Bernard is gorgeous if people can have Alfred, Archie and Wilfred why not bring Bernard back it has the saint connection, cute nickname Bernie and of course your father's name in it's favour, Vincent again Saint's name and Painter's, francis(cus) lovely name again with good history backing and food nicknames, Rollo is a bit more daring but again reminds me of such names Arlo, Milo so why not?
My top choices from your list would be
Boy:
Francis Bernard
Girl: Sylvia/ie (don't know if you've thought of middle name but a lovely Dutch name is Marika/Marieke) both options go lovely with sibling Vera, good luck with your choosing FlowersWink

Sophronia · 23/08/2017 14:33

Sylvia goes very well with Vera. I like Vincent, Francis and Bernard, but not Rollo.

grufallosfriend · 23/08/2017 14:53

Vera and Bernard!

grufallosfriend · 23/08/2017 15:00

And for a girl:

Vera and Sylvia

Loyly · 23/08/2017 15:01

Sylvia and Rollo.

starkid · 23/08/2017 15:07

I like Lydia and Vincent best, but also like Lana and Livia

n0ne · 23/08/2017 17:02

No clear favourites! Interesting. Seems like we're on the right track, at least. I'm sure we'll know as soon as we see that little face Smile

Livia or Vincent. Love them both & really dislike all the others! Lydia makes me think of Chlamydia, Lana is lovely apart from the unfortunate fact that it's Anal backwards. Sylvia just isn't my taste & makes me think of an overweight 50-something. Francis is OK (mainly because of Kevin Spacey & House of Cards) but Bernard & Rollo are beyond awful. Sorry!!

Imnotatypicalsausage · 23/08/2017 17:33

All the girls names are very nice. Lena? Agnes? Agatha? Cecile? Imelda?

Really really dislike Rollo (sounds like a joke name to me, doesn't go with Vera, and conjures up images of a clown or someone enormously fat!) but really like Francis or Bernard. They both sound good with Vera too.

kingfishergreen · 23/08/2017 17:38

I'd go for Silvia or Rollo (Dido's brother is called Rollo, the one in Faithless).have you considered Lyra? I love Lyra (and wish I'd used it).

stormytherabbit · 23/08/2017 17:38

Just not rollo

lizzieoak · 23/08/2017 17:46

I like Bernard very much. I agree with another poster that Vera and Vincent would be too match.

The girls names I'm less keen on, probably like Sylvia best. What about Saskia - that's a lovely Dutch name which people know in English.

BewareOfTheToddler · 23/08/2017 18:30

Out of your names, I love Livia and Francis, and Sylvia is lovely. I prefer Lara to Lana myself.
