My nephew is Elijah. Too close?
Like that it could be shortened to Ali which doesn't sound as similar to nephews nick name "Eli".

Sorry but Aliza is that name? Are you thinking of Eliza?

Chaffinch4 · 14/08/2017 21:27

I don't think cousins names being similar matters unless you see them a lot. But I've never heard of Aliza... how do you pronounce it?

BakerBear · 14/08/2017 21:34

Aliza is pronounced the same as Eliza but instead of eh its ah.

My cousin named her child this and i always think its a ruined version of Eliza

Chamonix1 · 14/08/2017 21:42

It's a real name.
And completely different meaning to Eliza.

I'd have pronounced this Ah-lee-za, so to me it wouldn't sound anything like Elijah. But I'm guessing you might pronounce it E-ly-za?

NumberlessUser · 14/08/2017 21:47

I'd pronounce it A-lee-zuh?

Chamonix1 · 14/08/2017 21:48

I would pronounce ah-ly-za
As opposed to eh-ly-za

Aliza is a gorgeous name.

I have seen it spelled as above, and also Alizah, and Aleezah.

I think all 3 spellings share the same meaning - joy.

Oscha · 14/08/2017 21:49

I know an (American) Aliza, pronounced Uh-lee-za. I think it's really pretty.

Raines100 · 14/08/2017 21:49

Thought Aliza was a Muslim girl's name, pronounced al-EEZ-a.
The English girl's name is Eliza, pronounced ee-LIE-za, and was originally a shortening of Elizabeth.
I think Aliza/Eliza and Elijah are too close for siblings but fine for cousins.

Nadinexo1 · 14/08/2017 21:55

I think it sounds gorgeous and I do know a few Alizas. a couple are from Muslim families but the other one isn't

bitsheepish · 14/08/2017 21:56

To be clear you should call her whatever you like. She's your daughter and you should feel free to embrace her name. I'm an ejit!

Chamonix1 · 14/08/2017 22:01

To be honest, I'm really confused about how it's pronounced.
Not so keen on ah-lee-zah which is how it seems to be pronounced.
I like ah-ly-za of which I think is in fact Just Eliza.
Which in my opinion is too close to Elijah.
The confusion itself is off putting don't want her to spend her life correcting people (inc her mother clearly!)

Just looks like Eliza with a letter changed to be different really.

AmyOb · 14/08/2017 22:45

Aliza is a nice name. I don't see why you need to change it to Eliza if its Aliza that you like. Its your baby honey, so you have the privilege of naming her any name you wish. However, I think Aliza is much uncommon than Eliza and its a pretty name for a girl.

SuperBeagle · 14/08/2017 23:16

Aliza is pronounced ah-LEE-zah.

If you want the pronunciation ah-LYE-zah, just go with Eliza as the difference is negligible (like Amelia and Emilia).

Eliza and Elijah are too close for siblings, but for cousins it depends whether you think it truly matters.
